It just became St. Patrick's Day, and I know some of us are going to celebrate. I can't be the only one. Something tells me us Yanks are going to get way more wasted than actual Irish people, given that we tend to heavily overdo anything involving the Emerald Isle, but I'm curious as to the precise degree.

We had our St. Patrick's Day celebrations yesterday. Drinking on a weekday? You're insane!

Wait, the US celebrates st. patricks day???????

    Weird.

And no, I don't plan on drinking tonight. I have college early in the morning, and I have a personal rule of not drinking the night before college.

I'll take the option that I'm only 16 and can't legally drink...

Not only do we celebrate it, we do so much more vigorously than the Irish. We treat it as a day to do anything remotely related to Ireland in theory, regardless of actual degree of connection to Ireland, and it's a pretty big deal for those of Irish descent and/or who like to drink. I'm pretty sure actual Irish people find it strange and off-putting.

I take it the interpretation of 'anything remotely related to ireland' is drinking yourself shitless. Because given their reputation, I hear they're difficult to surpass in that.

Yes, we do drink everything in sight. From what I've heard the Irish aren't the perpetual drunkards they are made out to be, and actually drink somewhat lightly for Europe, but this is 'Murica. We won't let such a minor thing as the actual Irish culture get in the way of celebrating Irish culture.

Pithiness aside, we treat St. Patricks day as Ireland Day, not as Celebrate What St. Patrick Did Day, and that is probably part of why we celebrate it with more vigor than Ireland does.

When I lived in spain, there were more irish bars than spanish ones, at least where I lived. I suppose we all drink pretty heavily. Here in england, the government keeps having a hissy fit about it.

Lol. I just think they should get their arses out of people's private business. Self inflicted liver poisoning is a human right.

I'm not Irish :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:, and I won't be drinking anything.

Actually, in America, we take any opportunity to legitimize our love for booze. Everyone's Mexican on Cinco de Mayo, everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, everyone's Italian on Columbus Day .

Not a drop. Alcohol is poison to me (mostly because I don't have the best liver, to say the least)

I'm not drinking because I don't particularly care for it.

A lot of Americans love to have an "excuse" to get drunk . It's perhaps like how drinking socially is viewed in higher esteem than drinking some vodka all alone. Plus, I think we Americans take multiculturalism to a whole 'nother level just for kicks.

US culture finds any possible excuse to justify a drunkfest. Cinco de Mayo (stolen from Mexico), St. Patrick's Day (stolen from the Irish), and a dozen others. I'm waiting for someone to come up with a way of turning the High Holy Days of the Jewish or Muslim faiths into excuses to party.

... I also notice there was no option on the "how much do you plan on drinking" poll of "none." I'll be drinking green vegetable juice to celebrate, thanks

I'm not saying you personally. But I dunno, it seems just stupid that a country that apparently loves to drink can't just do it for the sake of it, rather than scrawl around in the dirt for any excuse to do so. It isn't a crime.
