I am irreligious and I will lay my cards down and say that I am an open gay person (I hate labelling myself but its important sometimes)

However I am trying my best to have a selfless life, I have never been in a fight even as a kid, I do charity work and I love my boyfriend, I look out for my friends and my family and I flat out refuse to judge someone (I mean I am a gay guy with an Iranian as a best friend, people get horrified when they realise because they huge my friend based on where he comes from) .

What upsets me is when you hear these Christians, Muslims etc. ranting about the evils of homosexuality, some have said to my face that I am going to burn in Hell for loving another guy even though they don't know me at all apart from seeing me innocently hug my boyfriend when we parted in the street. These people probably go to church or the mosque every week (The Christian had a teeshirt and a sign saying that we should Repent with the name of a local church on so I assume he is a street preacher) but does that make them automatically a good person in God's eyes (assuming God exists) ?

Or these Muslims with a Dawah table yelled that I am going to Hellfire.... What upset me was that nobody said anything apart from another groups from the Irish Humanists who asked if I was alright

Hey, imagine how it goes down, when they are confronted by someone like me (a gay Christian). It's a bit of a curve ball that rocks them on their heels for a few moments, before they resort to calling me all the names under the sun too. Trust me, there is nothing that gets under their skin more. The last time it happened to me, I got into quite a serious exchange of views about what the Bible really says and the red mist descended big time. I honestly thought I was going to cause another man to have a heart attack!

Street preachers suck. I'm sorry you had to deal with them, and I'm glad that you had someone ask you if you were alright. I've very rarely met anyone, religious or not, who approves of street preachers, and even fewer who approve of their hateful shouting.

You're a fantastic person. Like you said, those people don't know you; the only think they know is their own bigotry. (*hug*) Don't let them get to you, alright?

The only time I've ever seen street preachers (besides Jehovah's Witnesses and LDS who are quite polite), was at school. Sometimes, the street preacher-student would gather a crowd and praise Jesus, literally. Oh, it was fun to watch. I don't recall if they ever attacked homosexuality but even if they did it never bothered me.

I love college because the atheists/humanists would fight back. There was even a campaign where you could trade your religious books for porn, called "Smut for Smut." There were even times when both groups were "protesting/preaching" at the same time and security had to be called .

Street preachers are operating from a very limited and rigid worldview. They rarely think for themselves, and their beliefs come not from meaningful critical analysis of why they think the way they do, but blind belief. In short, they are not operating from a place of vulnerability and openness, but a place of rigidity and certainty.

And religion without vulnerability is extremism.

I personally don't put any stock in the viewpoints of anyone whose views are so rigid that there's no room for discussion, critical analysis, or vulnerability. Honestly, I wouldn't give a second thought to what those sorts of people think.

For what it's worth, several of my friends, when I was a student at Oberlin, used to relish the appearance on campus of Brother Jed and Sister Cindy, two itinerant hellfire and brimstone preachers. My friends would wait until Jed and Cindy had gotten a bit of a crowd, then they'd take all their clothes off and start running around in circles around the crowd. It was some of the best entertainment ever to watch the response of Brother Jed and Sister Cindy to a half dozen naked people running around while they were trying to preach.

Does anyone here remember those adventure books where you had decisions to make that would determine the end to your adventure?
Like, you're confronted by a dragon with two heads and red eyes, do you: a; stand and fight (turn to page 212 b; hold up the broken mirror (turn to page 417)......etc.

The point of my example above, is that this is pretty much the way religious books work in my view.

You can choose many paths in the Bible/Koran to your own liking, so determining your own understanding of God etc.
Isn't it true that killing a man is a sin, yet God forgives soldiers who kill in the act of war?
Hypocritical crap if you ask me.

If they are getting on your case, ask them some of the following questions,
    Do you endorse slavery?
Do you think unruly children should be stoned?
Do you think women are inferior to men?
Should people who work on sabbath be killed?
    Should witches be killed?
Should adulterers be stoned to death?
You see, according to their bible, the answer to all of the above is "yes". You can then say, who the hell are they to judge' when they follow such a religion, which advocates all of the above.
If there was a god, do you really think he cares who you have a relationship with and what you so with your sexuality on this minuscule spec of a planet we are on in the grand scheme of the vast universe.

    Hope thus helps...

A couple of months ago I was on the subway in Washington, going to work, and there was a preacher shouting about how people will go to hell if they don't accept Jesus Christ as their savior. He didn't mention homosexuality, thankfully. DC is so liberal and everyone is so completely un-phased by street preachers and just ignore them.

I do not think it is a result of drugs, rather a misguided effort at trying to get people to convert to their religion and reach masses of people. However, shouting to strangers that they are going to burn in hell for eternity isn't exactly the best way to get people on board with your religion.

I am yet to have witnessed any street preaching that I know of.. Then again, some years back, I was in NYC and there were a group of men (?) who wore strange black attire and masks. They remind me of the Death Eaters from the Harry Potter series, but at the time I didn't make the connection. I am not entirely sure what their agenda was, but there was something about them that now seems cultish to me. Quite a few people were very upset about the things they were saying… I didn't argue with them.

Even now as an adult, I still wouldn't fancy getting into an argument with them, seeing as there was something very dark and sinister about that group. O_O

Christian preachers are a whole another matter. I am yet to have gone to any events where they were, but if I saw one, I might just end up getting into some type of argument with them. I usually like to avoid conflict so, I would have to be pretty upset to get myself into a situation like that.

You would think years of them trying that same method and failing all the time would make them come up with some thing else.

Ha, why do they even think that shouting at people is going to change their ways? The best approach is approaching people in a calm manner and preaching in love.

Now I don't know about Muslims, but Christians should know to not hold everyone to the same standard. The Bible says that non-believers should not be judged by believers: "12What do I care about judging outsiders? Isn’t it your job to judge insiders? 13God will judge outsiders. Expel the evil one from among you!" (1 Cor. 5:12-13). So really, those street preachers should try to get people to become believers, and then try to correct them on their sins once they know what kind of things are sin. Shouting never helped anyone.

I was at a rights protest once, and a preacher wearing a whiteboard turned up. I generally find them pretty hillarious. No one pays any attention to them. I've I'm in the mood, I may debate them. If not, I just thank them profusely.

In the face of stubborn bigoted blind idiots that go around trying to cram their views down everyone's throats, I usually laugh actually. Some people there is just no point arguing with them or trying to prove them wrong. If they were someone I knew personally it would be a little bit stickier of a situation, but strangers on the street corner trying to make me feel bad about being me? Thanks, but no thanks.

You can't please everyone. Focus on the people that respect you as an individual and don't act like there is something wrong with being you. No one else matters.

I remember those books ... I also used my special ability to travel through time and re-pick my decision (who knew killing spiders is considered a GOOD thing to do!).

I couldn't agree more though, people chose how to read the bible.
Some read it in a certain way that gave birth to Islam.
Others read it in a certain way that gave birth to Christianity.
While another group read it in a way that those are just stories that are there to teach us about morals and not neceserily if a god exists or not.

You should ignore the biggots that think gay people will "go to hell" because its written in a book, they'll get their punishment by having a sucky, full of hatered life.
The ones that shouldn't be ignored are the ones that pro-actively making gay people die.
