So, I'm going to be going off to college in a few months, aaaand, I've always kinda had a thing against my name. I'm not really sure why. I don't hate it, but I don't like it. Anyways, my name's Domonique, or Dom for short, as many people call me (which isn't too bad really). But for whatever reason, I've been wanting to make me nickname Dawn (for personal symbolic reasons, mainly because dawn is like the crossroad of night and day) and it KINDA sounds close to Dom. Dawn. Dom. Ahem, anyways, despite whether or not that's just a lame nickname, I'm just wondering this:

Do you generally feel its weird to give yourself a nickname? I see that the majority of the internet world thinks its stupid, but personally, I don't see what's stupid about it at all, especially if you're moving away somewhere.

So, self-appointed nicknames: yes or no.

I've used a nickname for most of my life.
[BIRTH NAME REDACTED] was just too girly.

It's not stupid. Whether you're totally renamin' yourself or just a nickname, you're takin ownership of you and you're doin it for yourself. And there's nuthin wrong with that. the people who are against it of course feel it's up to other people to define you and give you a nickname themselves, and that's the real stupid power-hungry type of shit right there. These people need to get over themselves and let people make decisions for themselves.

As long as it's nothing egotistical, I see nothing wrong with it. Yours isn't, so I wouldn't have a problem with it (not like it would be my place to have a prob w it) if you used that as a nickname.

I has one, but I don't really share it with anyone, and I don't really use it much anyway.

It isn't weird. I think it's interesting. Go for it. Make one or you might be given one. I got seemingly unfortunate nicknames. It was annoying at first but now I like it. Nicknames can be endearing, even if some might seem offensive.

That's basically the main argument I was hearing all over the internet. Everyone's like, "nah, YOU don't get to give yourself a nickname, only other people can" and I found it just a really stupid argument honestly...

    Uhhhhhhhhh....

People have called me Belle all my life, it's easier to say, and people NEVER spell Annabelle right.

Two of my friends call me Anna, but that's it.

    I have one self-appointed nickname, Japan-Fan.
It was my username on a animation website, but the website shutdown.
Despite this, some of my friends who know me from the website still call me J.F.

Most people won't have problems with nicknames. They might ask some questions about it, but that's just curiosity more than anything else.

Renaming yourself because you dislike your regular name is one thing-- naming yourself "The Murphinator" or "Hawkeye" or something like that comes off as douchey/pathetic.

If you're going off to college, that's probably the best time to rebrand yourself as you see fit.

I've always been called by my first name. The two rare exceptions are some friends who call me by my last name sometimes (to differentiate me from their cousin who has the same first name) and a nickname some people would call me in school, "Bo." I prefer my first name, though.

But I see nothing wrong with giving yourself a nickname.

Most people just call me by my last name. I'm fine with it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

self appointed nicknames only work if people call you it.

In high school, people called me a portmanteau of my first initial and my last name (Bryan, you know what I'm talking about). However I don't go by my given birth name, but the nickname I've had since 3rd grade that a teacher gave me because of my Italian heritage and the fact that I was the third student on the list with the same first name.

I don't think it's egotistical or silly at all. One of my best friends goes by a nickname because her birth name is too formal-sounding. If you don't like your name then it's totally understandable to ask people to call you by a nickname.
