I just wanted to give a heads-up to the community that we've granted permission for a researcher at Loyola University to examine existing posts in the public forums here as part of research she's doing on i individuals who identify as intersex and their experiences with intimate relationships.

The researcher will not be contacting anyone, nor posting to the forums, only reading and analyzing posts that are already posted here using standard qualititative research methods that involve linguistic analysis, coding, and similar techniques.

The posts will be used in the aggregate and nothing identifying individual posters will be used in the final study. She will not have any access to any content other than what a regular member would have.

ECCS' board of directors is generally supportive of formal research that provides greater insight and understanding into issues affecting LGBT populations, but we are also careful to limit research requests to ones that have proper oversight and review by the respective institutions and academic or clinical supervisors supervising the research protocols. Additionally, each request is evaluated individually to ensure that it does not intrude on the members of the community, or the community as a whole.

This research proposal has been submitted to Loyola's Institutional Review Board and research will not commence until approval from the IRB has been received and provided to us.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to PM me or any other member of the admin team.

Hmmm. I'm generally suspicious of research into us queer folk. But this doesn't sound too bad, I guess. Thanks for letting us know.

Will the researchers have access to our profiles, and pictures and such?

Well it said they'll have access to all the normal things that a regular member can, however, they still can't look at your pictures unless you friend request them, or set the pictures to public.. Sooo.

I don't see the problem... they won't have access to anything regular members would not see and the EC Admins seem to trust them. This is for science guys. : 3

If their academic integrity is there, then fine.

Can't say I'm a fan of this however.

Well if it's for science I'm on board, but I don't really see what they're gonna find.

For members whom are apprehensive, the staff receives messages from individuals wishing to use the information and activity of the site for research on a fairly frequent basis. Reflecting on the amount of times any of you in this thread have heard the staff reveal that a study is presently being carried out, it should be quite telling of how much thought and consideration is done before approval is given.

There is no reason to fret.

I thought that even when information was only used in aggregate (and non-identifiably), researchers still had to get signed consent from each participant in a study. At least, when I was in school learning about psych research studies and learning to design them, I thought it did...?

Can anyone explain to me how what I thought was a standard requirement for ethical research involving humans is not applicable, here?

    References, please.
