Most people eat meat, but I've always wondered how many still would if they actually had to kill the animal in question themselves, butcher them, and then prepare them.

So, with that in mind, have you ever eaten meat from an animal you killed and/or butchered/cleaned?

Myself, I have only done so with fish, and even then, it was hard to kill them and gut them. I've seen chickens killed, and deer and cows butchered, and it's quite grizzly, even though I do love the taste of venison.

This is a multiple choice poll, so you can pick more than one.

Yes, I think so. When I was little, I went ice fishing with my friend and her grandpa and I think we ate the fish we caught.

I feel too bad to kill animals so I just eat them when they're killed by other humans.

    No.

Closest I ever came was probably in elementary school when I imagined the possibility of fishing. Inspired, I think, by some book where the Real Boys (as opposed to me) were camping, and went fishing.

Then...we got a small aquarium and the thought of fishing lost its appeal mighty fast.

Nope, but my birth father has. He shot a dove by accident and wanted to know what it tasted like.

I'm WAY to lighthearted to kill an animal. I don't think I could look at a butchered animal without fainting...

    Well, let's see here...

I've caught, killed, de-scaled, and gutted fish.

I've helped to skin/pluck and butcher goats, pigs, ducks, and geese, but did not actually kill them. In the case of the goats, I often watched them being born and helped raise them until they were old enough to be killed and butchered. We generally kept the females for milk and butchered the males although in later years we butchered females as well because we didn't need any more goats than we had. Male goats can be obnoxious and more than once I would look forward to the day when I would be eating one in a nice marinade.

Hunting is very common where I grew up and most of my peers (males and females both) routinely hunted moose, caribou, bear, rabbit, and ptarmigan depending on the season. A lot of folks also fished. All of these activities included the skinning and butchering of whatever you killed, of course.

Yep, fish and turtles. Turtles are a pain to clean.

I don't have the heart to kill an animal unless I absolutely have to or I'll die. I love animals.
I cried when I hit a bird with my car and that was just a bird

No. Closest I've come to that was having some hog that my ex-girlfriend's family had killed. Maybe the best meat I've ever had.

I've caught, killed, and cleaned fish like red drum, and have also helped clean chicken and turkeys at my grandparents farm.

I haven't personally killed and eaten an animal, but I've aided in the cleaning.

Nope, never been hunting/fishing. But then again, I'm a city kid, so it's not really my fault lol.

I've gone fishing, but I don't like fish. And I've shot and ate partridge before, but cleaning them is a little too gross for me.

That's also the part that gets me. I really love game birds, but having to clean them has kept me way from the idea of taking it up as a hobby. I do think it would be fun, going out in the woods with a trusty dog, and then, being able to cook an extra nice dish from your efforts. The other thing I'd need to be 100% sure of would be how to cook the game in question. Unless I knew I could, I'd never have the nerve to even try hunting anything.

Often, I have fantasies of what it would be like to survive in the wilderness, far from civilization, like in those books by Gary Paulsen, such as Hatchet.

Or maybe I've just lived in the city too long.

I can't kill a mammal, though, I have no trouble eating them. I've eaten Venison that friends have killed. It's good. However, I have no problem with catching, killing, filleting, and eating fish.

I could not kill an animal such as deer or other quadrupeds. I don't judge those who do, either because that's how they make their living or that's a hobby. That's fine.

I would probably enjoy fishing, though I haven't yet ... you know, buying a pole, bait, and a fishing license. Yada yada. And I also would feel better about eating fish, which is expensive, instead of eating meat and poultry, which I do eat.

I wouldn't have much issue in hunting and dealing with the game myself. I've killed animals before, though, it was always a case of a mercy killing, so, I have no qualms with killing. I've rooted around in the guts for skinning/autopsy purposes, so that doesn't bother me.

I think the biggest issue would be dressing the hide in regards of doing it properly so that the internals don't contaminate the meat. I suppose that can be taken care of with some careful cutting.
