A while ago, there was the Tumblr Accent Challenge that was going on in the web. Then, we had a thread about milk/melk mountain/mount'n. Which got me thinking: How do you pronounce the following words? Part of them were from the Tumblr challenge, part of them are words that were mentioned in the thread(http://emptyclosets.com/forum/chit-chat/131962-milk-melk.html) or in a national survey (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html)

Aunt, Roof, Route, Theater, Iron, Been, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Pin, Pen, Probably, Tree, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Pajamas, Caught, Naturally, Aluminum, Crayon, Doorknob, Envelope, Talk, Milk, Mountain, Mary, Marry, Merry,

Pin/Pen and Mary/Merry/Marry were chosen because some places pronounce them differently and others the same.

Would love to hear everyone's different ways of pronouncing these words. You can use #######.com to record

    _____________

I found out I have trouble with tree by listening to myself . I'm also curious to hear y'all say milk .

Ah, yes, my typical apprehension about recording and listening to my voice, immediately followed by my realisation that a) I don't sound the way I do in my head b) I sound perfectly male and c) I don't sound weird. Anyway, there you go.

...okay, so i know my voice is really feminine but I wanted to do it anyway- I dunno. Kind of wonder if I have an accent, tbh.

    Ah, why not?

I'm not sure why I pronounced "water" like that, I usually say it more like wadder, but everything else is true to life, haha. It's always distressing to hear myself recorded and realize just how much I sound like a 12 year old. Gah.

Lol I pronounced Mary, Merry, and Marry in the same way. I was tempted to say Merry Christmas at the end :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I'm kind of surprised I'm doing this since I don't like my voice, but I already uploaded a picture so what the hell.

Don't let my current location in Kentucky fool you...here's my voice in all its Californian glory, where Mary, merry, and marry are all the same thing

With "Orleans," I dislike saying it like that, but using the French pronunciation doesn't fit in with the rest of the words. In Australia, the "eans" is pronounced "eens," regardless of American English or French pronunciation. I also maintain a clear distinction between "Mary," "marry," and "merry."

Sorry about the blurry background sound; my laptop doesn't have the greatest microphone, and there's rain and a washing machine going on somewhere downstairs.

And AlamoCity, your voice is almost violently Texan.

Hey. I dunno about you but you sound male- young, like maybe 12, but yeah, you sound fine.
