Does the Q in LGBTQ stand for queer or questioning. My gay friend was trying to tell me questioning but I'm not sure. Either would make sense I guess.

Queer. I'm almost certain it's queer...

Depends on who you ask, but I think queer is the more commonly used term.

Queer is usually the use. I wouldn't call questioning a set part of the LGBT spectrum; a straight person questioning is still straight, whereas genderqueer/otherwise queer people with no other term are certainly.

Then what is a queer compared to the other "letters". Can someone not be LGBT and still be a queer?

I've always heard 'Queer/questioning'. I use it for both.

It should be pointed out that it's things like this that mean most people won't use the Q in the first place...just like the 'does A stand to Asexual or Allies' debate...

Acronyms shouldn't be too long, so I use LGBT.
I think "questioning" is better to put than "queer", because I have no idea what "queer" even means anymore.

LGBTQ is just the beginning of the acronym that continues to get bigger and bigger. the last I heard it was LGBTQQIAAP. I think it is losing its function as being a short way of saying not heteronormative. But they have added 2 Q's for queer and questioning, an I for intersex, 2 A's for Asexual and Allies (I'm not sure I, personally, want allies in the acronym, but I didn't make it.), and P for Pansexual. There are even longer ones as well.

I actually read lgbtqidk for I don't know on various websites. My uni prefers lgbtqi which I have to admit I prefer. It seems strange to try and simplify a community that is so diverse. As to the q I always use it as queer.

The Q stands for both Queer and Questioning. When I was identifying as questioning, I felt that I was still part of the LGBTQ, even though I prefer GSM.

In addition, one can be any sexuality and still be questioning. A lot people go through the questioning stage as a part of the process of coming to term of their sexuality, and having a term for what they are feeling can be very helpful.

I think that the Q can stand for queer and questioning. Somebody said above that since people are questioning are still straight. I see a couple of problems with this statement. The first is that there are multiple perspectives from where you can start questioning. You can start questioning from the viewpoint that you are straight, bi, gay or the multitude of other identities that are out there. The second problem that I see is that questioning people need a support system, and if there are not going to get that from the GSM community, then where are they going to get it from?

I believe it used to be queer and now the official is questioning. Doesn't matter too much, if you say LGBT people understand what you're talking about without having to have the complete name. By the way it is technically LGBTTIQQ2SA trolol

I thought it was questioning, but it could mean both.
I usually just go with LGBT or LGBT+.

I always heard that it was "questioning". "Queer" is, well, pretty well encompassed by all the other letters, no?

Agree with you about long acronyms, or acronyms in general, really. One of my hoodoos. >.<

I've seen both, but I lean towards queer.
For A I prefer Asexual. Allies, although I love what they do, aren't under the LGBT umbrella.
I still prefer shorter acronyms so I use LGBT or LGBT+

I think that the Q is used in both ways, queer and questioning.
