My school's GSA club organized a small campaign to raise awareness about the Day of Silence. It's when people say nothing for the whole day to symbolize how the LGBTQA+ community is forced into silence by fear of harassment and discrimination. I took part in it today, and even some of my friends did it too. The teachers were quite aware that I was participating. One of my friends said something like this : "It's sad that people are using this day to remain silent about gay rights. People shouldn't be silent about that, they should be vocal." Basically, some of the GSA members were stationed outside the cafeteria for the first few days of the week raising awareness. (I'm not in the GSA, nor do I care to be in it). I just think it's pretty cool that there's more awareness being made. I have heard some snarky remarks by kids such as "gay rights are over rated". However, if it wasn't for them, then there would be no need for these kinds of events. My parents aren't home yet, so they don't know about the Day of Silence. I'm not sure how to give my message to them that I'm taking part in this type of cause.
Yes! Though I don't have classes on Friday. I have been silent all day. Which really is hard for me lol 5 hours 27 minutes left
I didn't take part in it, but I did get a GLSEN "Day of Silence" sticker when I went to the LGBT center for my counseling appointment.
I am working and interview clients so silence doesn't work for me. I did donate to y school's PRIDE club
It doesn't matter. I'm on holidays. In any case, if I weren't, a day without speaking at school would bring me behind my work, which is not something I'd be willing to do.
I wish I knew it was today. But then again, I don't remember saying anything anyway. Being shy can be a benefit.
I'm not interested in it. I respect it's symbolic meaning but I feel it's inconvenient and ineffective. Words will always accomplish more than silence
I'm explaining it to everyone I know in the morning. The only time I'm talking is if it's academic or serious. So, yeah, I am going to take part, although, speaking out about it would do much, much more.
My school's actually taking part in it, so yes. It's tomorrow for me, and we get excused from speaking in class if we signed up, which I did.
