What's your opinion on people who choose not to label themselves or are against labels?

Mainly, I just don't like the way "lesbian" sounds if I call myself that. It's not that I dislike the label. It's really hard to explain. Like, I'm fine with "gay," but...

People who choose not to label themselves? Fine. People who try to prevent other people from having labels? Absolutely not.

In my experience, the most anti-label people are incredibly easy to label, and most are cis and straight or gay. It seems like not having a difficult or unliked identity makes it easier to not realise how labels help.

People who don't want to label themselves are fine. People who are against others labeling are engaged in divisive, policing behavior, and that's completely inappropriate.

Said individuals are ALSO generally cisgender, gay or lesbian people who have the luxury of not being challenged by having an identity that the English language doesn't even cover.

That's interesting. I want to be labelled, but I'm too hard to label. Sometimes I like to pretend that I'm anti-label just to feel better, but eventually I go back to wanting a label.

Am I just missing some key knowledge about you? It seems like you fit a couple of binary identities pretty well.

Eh. They're definitely better than the people who stick a ton of labels upon themselves to look special.
Still, being anti-label could be a source of confusion.

I've met remarkably few people who do this who aren't cis and hetero or homosexual.

I'm ok with them if that works for them that's good not everyone can use labels you know . So if they choose not to use one then it's ok . I use to be labeless myself . I think as long as they make it clear to whoever their dating what they like it's fine

You're right. I've had the exact same experience. Mostly teenage cis girls saying they're "lesbian FTMs", "transethnic", and the like. Men can't be lesbians, and the concept of "identifying as another race" is a mockery of trans people.

I like to think I'm pretty anti-label. But I would never force someone to adopt my point of view. I personally don't like labels and prefer to deal with people 1:1 and not as groups. But again, if someone wants to identify as something, more power to them. This goes for every kind of label too, like race and stuff.

Ja, I should have added white people who don't want to admit they're white and "let's throw in every assortment of European possible to make me seem interesting no matter how irrelevant it is to the situation and ignore how little I know about the cultures I claim to be."

Don't worry! I'm actually not anti-label, I'm just anti-stupidity. For example, you're using lesbian as a label to tell people "I'm a woman who loves women." The people I am talking about use labels to make themselves look unique (I'm a queer fat disabled twoc who uses fae pronouns!1!! When "Black, queer trans woman" would work fine.)

I know that I'm a cis female, but that's about it.

I also kind of hate the Kinsey scale. As in, "I'm a Kinsey lim x -> 0+ (6-x), so I'm bi, right? It's a continuum!"

^ Sliding scales are incredible, Adrian! Why would you make a complicated spectrum when you could have a scale with clearly defined sections (you could even make subsections to be more inclusive)?

All joking aside, I like labels as long as the person using them doesn't feel the need to make a label for every little aspect about themself in a vain attempt to feel "special".

I suspect people who are "anti-label" tend to want to be "special." I admit, labels use broad strokes but they are helpful and essential to operating as humans because we love (and almost pathologically need "labels" and "boxes"). That you're "anti-label" (to me) sounds like you have just yet to find what label/box you belong in.

I understand that we all go through periods of self-discovery where labels aren't exactly self-evident, but most will eventually find a category or label they fit into.

That said, I'm against typecasting and stereotyping people based entirely on labels. We must acknowledge the individuality of persons.
