So today I was leaving school and while I was walking to my bus this old guy walked up to me holding something. He pushed it towards me and I saw it was a bible. I said no thank you, but he didn't listen and shoved it into my hands. Then I saw a few boxes full of bibles and I realized that this guy was handing bibles to kids walking out of school. He gave one to everybody that walked his way. My principal was standing just a few feet away from this guy, and I thought he shouldn't have let him do this. I got kind of angry since he just shoved a bible into my hands after I told him no, and because I think this violates seperation of church and state. This happened once before when I was in sixth grade. I think this is illegal, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know?

Passing out bibles isn't illegal. But the guys that do that are stubborn and rude sometimes. I tell them I already own one and the still Shove one at me. Sorry that made you feel uncomfortable

He is allowed to hand out the bibles, if he was selling them on school property it would have been a different matter. Your school shouldn't be allowing solicitors on school property though

eh it's just a book at the end of the day, the bible is an okay one, nothing special.

We had some men doing this on campus a few weeks ago... At least they weren't rude about it. I already have one, and several of little ones they hand out at home, but I never really say no when someone is handing out something like that, even if I might not ever look at it. The fact he was rude while doing it is quite uncomfortable though.

Keeping your hands at your sides and refusing to touch the bible (or whatever else they are trying to pawn off on you) is an excellent way to cancel this sort of behavior.

You should have just dropped it on the floor where you stood. That would get the message across. Either that or, if there was a bin near by, chuck it in there.

    Happy days

    Exactly what I was thinking.
For them its a holy book so if u drop it its like a bad thing so maybe it'll teach him a lesson not to do that next time :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

And you could always report him to your school, it might not be illegal but im sure they know better (propoganda near schools isn't allowed I think).

It is sort of messed up. But it's not illegal.

A guy handing out bibles, even to kids, is not illegal. But the principal standing right there and not doing anything is more questionable, because that's a school official expressing approval when maybe it should have been clear that it made some students uncomfortable.

  13. It's not illegal since this constitutes as free speech. If this was mandated by law, then it's be a different story. I think the only way to fix this is to persuade the school to have a solicitation policy and complain to the principal, even though he saw.

In the future, keep your hands in your pockets if you pass him. When people do this on campus, I just politely tell them that I'm not Christian. Once, when it was a rude young guy, I told him that I worshiped penguins - worked like a charm and I bolted.

If you didn't want if for whatever reason, you could've taken it and sold it to a second-hand store. You would have made a couple bucks and no skin off your nose.

Carry an appropriately atheistic book for this purpose. Whenever someone tries to give you a bible, reciprocate.

But in reality, I'd probably just take it and say thank you. :/

I agree with the others that it's not illegal, but I'm surprised your principle allowed it. :/

I surprised so many people agreed with this. It's extremely disrespectful. Even if he was trying to give you a bible
