Maybe he snapped for some reason, or maybe he's a giant homophobe, but either way, I think you may want to avoid him, especially if he physically assaults you. Friends should never do that to other friends. Anyways, if you want to talk some more about it, my ears are always open, as well as a lot of other people's here.
