Can animals be gay?

Depends how you define the word gay, there are many homosexual relations in the animal world, monkeys of all sorts being the most numerous to indulge in same sex sexual activities often due to the heirarchy system where only the alpha male has the right to mate with the female and the other males have to work off their sexual energy somehow.

Is just having sex between two males or two females enough to be througt gay or do you need an emotional and sentimental attaction towards the same sex?

They did a study on gay sheep right here in Oregon at Oregon State University. Farmers were not happy because these rams were not making babies like they were supposed to. They were "mating" with eachother. However, the whole thing ticked off animal rights activitists. Evidently after they observed them for awhile they killed them to look at their brains. It was quite the controversy.

That's just, wrong. What, were they expecting the sheeps' brains to be rainbow or something? I mean, just because the sheep was gay didn't mean it had some weird looking brain.

And yes. Animals can be gay. It's been observed in animals such as dolphins and dogs.

Many animals in nature participate in homosexual activities -- I don't know if you want to consider that gay for an animal but it's not uncommon at all.

Yes there can be gay animals. Scientists are actually doing studies on dolphins now as they seem to be animals that have sex for reasons other than reproduction and there has been noted homosexual activity in them.
