What is the REAL percentage of homosexuals in America?

We constantly get lied to by hearing the 5% thing. We all know a huge amount of individuals conceal their desires to get with someone of the same sex.

We have heard estimates of 10%. Maybe that's true, but I feel otherwise.

I feel if homosexuality was something common & accepted & looked upon as if it were "normal" by the majority, a huge amount of individuals would date the same sex. I would estimate somewhere between 20-30%.

Maybe I'm pushing the number too high, but what do you all think? Thanks in advance for opinions or factual information.

I've always felt like 10 was about right. No facts to back that up--it just seems to correspond to my lived experience. Don't get me wrong, I've had periods in my life where I felt like I hardly even knew any straight people, but I always knew they were out there...

No, I think your probably right.

I know the real percentage cannot be 5%. There are too many people in the closet for that to be accurate.

    I think it's 15% by the least.

Anywhere between 15%-20% (for exclusively gay people) is my estimate.
For bisexual people, I believe the numbers would be much higher, because Kinsey Scale.
For trans people, I'd say... 0.5%-1%? Yeah, seems about right to me. Every one in a couple thousand people is trans (...1:3500?). The one in 30,000 statistic is from Europe in the 1960s. Those numbers are very, very outdated.

You'll never get a poll that's correct. There are way too many factors involved that make accurate polling pretty much impossible.

First of all, not all people who experience attraction towards people of the same sex, identify as "gay" or "bi". And secondly, even those who do identify with the labels, are not always honest about it with others.

Ive always heard its between 7 and 10% of men are gay and slightly lower for females. Not sure if thats accurate though. I do find predictions of over 15% to be very hard to believe! Thats more than 1 in 7!

I think it's much closer to 5% than anything above 10% personally.

Impossible to know, 10% MAX. 1 in 10...seems about right, but it'll vary between the states in USA, or at least between those who acknowledge it.

I just feel only 10% of the population willing to get with someone of the same sex is too low, I'd agree with the least at 15%.

I would say 15% too. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a bit more.

Over 10% seems too high to me. So I am going to go with the standard 5-10%.

Well, encompassing all queer identities, I'd speculate up to 20%, perhaps higher. It's a big closet out there...

I would say about 6-7% and 10% at most. It is definitely not 15% or higher. I think some people tend to think that because a lot of gay people tend to hang around other gay people and that makes it seem like there are more of us.

For exclusively gay people 5% seems about right. I honestly don't think there are so many of us.

I feel that's too low. At least the desire to get with another dude.

In my study sample we found about 8%. It was a somewhat biased sample (mostly women, young college students in a liberal school, lots of psychology students), but it's still pretty close to the commonly-cited 10%.

If you consider everyone who kissed someone of the same sex or whatever, sure it's higher. But a girl kissing a girl doesn't make her a lesbian.

I've heard from as low as 3.5% to as high as 20%. I'd say it's somewhere between 5% (conservative guess) and 15% (liberal guess).
