Huge difference between innocence and bein kept ignorant. Innocence is chasing a ball alongside a fence and caring only about the ball. The latter is accidentally loping the ball over the fence and being forbidden from retrieving it.
When I went to school I learned two things. Kids believe in Santa Clause and God, and I hadn't heard of either of those things before school. I wish my mom would have told me.
That's a good analog, and I totally agree. When it's relevant to them, children should learn. ---------- Post added 1st May 2014 at 06:18 PM ---------- *analogy
I was a terrible, nosy child who found sneaky ways to pilfer candy and open the wrappers quietly in the night.
Knowledge is power. I agree, that being kept in the dark is a weird cushion that parents believe benefit children although let's be honest, how does it lead to a rewarding life if you don't know anything about the world around you?
Someday, you will be old enough to read the original French version of Little Red Riding Hood and be really weirded out.
I guess it depends on how you define innocence. Is innocence ignorance? Or just ignorance in regards to certain things?
I think children need to be innocent for a while. Learning happens, then they see what the world is. I wish I could still be an innocent child
There are a LOT of different ways to define innocence (and ignorance). I just think a kid should be allowed to be a *kid* and have some fun. Get dirty, have slumber parties, giggle with friends, be able to be completely fascinated with something simple like bugs or dirt or butterflies. Too early kids are being told what to wear and how to wear it, who to hang out with, what activities they can and cannot engage in after school... School itself takes up a good half to 3/4ths of most childhoods... Personally I wish I'd had more time to run around laughing and chasing and falling in the dirt and just being blissfully happy, without "this is how a girl should dress" and "you have to get good grades!!" and "you and your best friend can't be in your room alone because he's a boy" and.... All of that.
