Any martial artists here on EC?

I'm always amused by peoples reactions when you tell them your hobby is spending two hours plus being hit with things for your own amusement.

I did several martial arts when I was younger. Hap-ki-do, mainly (not to be confused with aikido) and karate. I haven't been to classes in years, though I occasionally practice. I want to start up again, but haven't found the time, and have been unable to find places offering hap-ki-do, as it seems to be pretty rare.

Yeah, I did kick boxing for a couple of months and then kempo Kai for for half a year. Got my first belt and the classes were always the best moments in my weeks. I loved sparring! Sadly I have not been able to find a gym I like where I live now.

A nice boost in self-confidence that gets you fit (and able to kick some ass... only if needed kids!) what's not to like

I want to do more than I do now...I just don't like the 'competition' arts very much...

Yes, I'd do Shukokai karate. I've been doing it for 23 years and hold a 4th degree (4th dan or yondan) black belt. I'd probably be a 5th dan nearly taking my 6th if I hadn't had to cut training back when I had my family but rank isn't important to me anyway.

Most of the good things about me come from my karate. My fitness and strength. My confidence and discipline. When I was younger, I had very bad concentration problems but karate helped me attain focus. I also met my ex-wife at karate and we have 2 lively boys.

I don't do competitions as they are more like a game of tag. Instead me and my pals just like to kick the crap out of each other without rules. I've only had 2 fractured fingers and my nose broken 3 times so over 23 years I've done alright

I've also studied to a lesser degree, judo, aikido, wing chun and bjj. I also use the principles of jeet kune do to optimise my karate.

As you can tell, I'm a bit of a martial arts nut..

    Happy days

I did for a long time as a youngin up until my mid twenties but I haven't in years and I made first black in a type of Okinawan art similar to Isshin Ryu but I guarantee I can't do a fraction of what I used to be able to and honestly I was never a good fighter. I can't grapple to save my life

I'm a Shodan (1st degree) in Shotokan Karate. Been doing it for almost 6 years. Until I moved across state to my new job I was pretty close to being ready for testing 2nd degree.

May be able to return to the dojo in the summer vacation.

And yea I hate tournament stuff. I always suck out or somehow get disqualified.

I've received my black belt in Kung Fu. Did it for about 8 years prior to and after a year and half break I'm currently getting back into it, because my schedule allows it now.

Is "inner city high school" a martial art?

  13. I absolutely love martial arts. I've done Taekwondo for 11 years now, and I've dabbled in other things like BJJ and Krav Maga.

I took jujitsu for a couple years in high school. The highlight, if you can call it that, was when the sensei was demonstrating a move on me and he was supposed to karate-chop the inside of my knee. He missed my knee and hit somewhere higher up and much more painful...

I took up karate about a year ago and I've attended classes semi-regularly since then, it's definitely something I endeavour to continue and hopefully attain a black belt in.

I've been practicing kyudo (Japanese archery) for ~ 2 years, which I try to do regularly (at least several times per week). Also, I study in a koryu (pre-WWII) style kendojo. I really like it because it is a complete system: doing sparring with shinai/bogu, iaido kata (I hope to get a shinken -real sword- soon), and bokken kata. That's usually what I'm doing Saturday mornings, along with sometimes kyudo. It's funny because I take light rail trains to get to my dojo, so people are always confused what's the big stick wrapped in fabric.

Both my kyudo and kendo work are noncompetitive; the dojos I belong to aren't directly affiliated with national federations, but the senseis have the pedigree of learning from Japanese masters. I care little for competitions with others, so martial arts suit me well.
