Today is a Civic Holiday in Ontario. In 1968 the Toronto City Council decided to name the holiday after John Graves Simcoe, an Englishman who was named, in 1791, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, which later became Ontario. He surveyed and set up the first road system in Ontario, and enacted legislation against slavery that ultimately led to its abolition throughout the British Empire. Unfortunately very few people outside of Toronto call it Simcoe Day.
...It's called Simcoe Day? 0.o I just thought it was the August Long Weekend XD Dang. I need to do some research on mah country...>.< Anywho, happy long weekend ^.^
Panda...you are one in 20 Canadians who actually know this. Hahahaha. I didn't even know it was a long weekend because 1) It's always been summer vacation 2) I've always had jobs (like kitchen) where holidays can be taken away. Just this year I was like, "This is a long weekend?" And I've been trying to figure out why it's a long weekend and so far the response is, "I don't know." May the Bevtaur be kind to you!
Phil.. I was just talking about this yesterday in the chatroom... And apparently this holiday originated because Canadians think that we need more rest.. And in BC they call it BC day I think.. according to Nitro
