Now, I didn't name this thread 'things that are overhyped' because I feel that what does and does not deserve it's popularity is subjective; however, I wanted to discuss the times in which it seems as though everyone else in the world is obsessed with something while, personally, we either do not care for or despise. This thread was inspired by a SNL skit which, like most, drag on a bit too long, but is insanely accurate about society:

Personally, I do love Beyonce, but her following is easily the most militant fan base in existence. People frequently get flooded and dragged through the mug on social media for anything even unflattering about her or her music. A number of musicians have lost over half of their fan base for criticizing. One Direction fans will be dramatic for a while, but criticizing Beyonce will have anyone from teens to middle aged mothers coming for you on social media for ages. It's ruthless.

So, I want to know all of your thoughts and experiences with social obsessions. Specifically:

1. What are a few things that a large portion of society has become obsessed with that you don't understand?

2. How you ever been shamed or attack for disliking a specific craze?

1) K-pop. I am the odd one out of my Asian friends, acquaintances, and family because I'm the only one who does not listen to it. I like alternative, indie rock, pop rock, and EDM instead. I never understood why anyone would listen to music that mostly has foreign lyrics. If you speak and understand Korean fluently, then listening to K-pop sounds reasonable. But I know some people who don't understand it yet still listen to it. Beats me.

2) Neither shamed nor attacked for disliking K-pop. However, when I told my friend that K-pop has no English lyrics, he educated me by saying that some songs have English lyrics. Still, I don't bother trying it. I listened to J-pop as a kid and thought it sounded cool, per anime. But I quickly got bored of it because I never understood the song's meaning. I feel like it would be the same with K-pop. Also, I lack the motivation to learn foreign languages :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

1. Comedy - films or stand-up. I'm an extremely serious person. I mean, I laugh but not at what mainstream society finds funny. Also, I rarely laughed or smiled growing up so, laughing is more an expression of joy than finding something humorous for me. "Comedy" films are usually boring and disgusting IMO, though, I do enjoy my romantic comedies sometimes (like "French Kiss").

2. I have been ridiculed mercilessly for my above opinion. I have been accused countless times of being "elitist" and "the fun police." I just don't like it!! I don't force Plato upon the world so, I wish the world wouldn't force "comedy" upon me. :frowning2:

*Note: I do like Shakespearean comedy and the like. :grin:

1. I never understood why everyone was obsessed with Harry Potter movies/books. Honestly I thought they were boring and well, bleh.

2. No, I have been asked why I don't like them though.

(European) Football. It seems like everyone else supports a team, but I have no interest at all. It's quite literally a bunch of extravagant chavs getting paid hundreds of thousands of pounds week to kick a football - and they're not very good at it.

Facebook as well - I had an account, but ended up closing it. It's really boring, and people have nothing interesting to say on their status updates. Plus, I don't presume others are even remotely interested in what I had for breakfast, or how much alcohol I consumed over the weekend. I also feel pressured into accepting friend requests from relatives I don't even like, and then get a load of shit when I decline or remove them. I don't like talking to these people in real life, so why would I want to talk to them online?

Facebook's okay, but nobody really messages me.
Celebrities have too much emphasis placed on them for being actors/musicians.

1. Quite a few things
-Social Media(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) I've never really understood why people care what everyone is doing at every second of the day

-Anime: Apparently this is the new thing that people watch now. I personally don't get the big deal. Its a bunch of animated characters and I think it's all in Japanese(?) so I don't understand how they would understand what is going on. Also I've heard that there is a lot of nudity/porn involved which seems unspeaking because yet are animated characters and not people. I've never bothered watching it. I'll stick to my sitcoms and Prison Break/The Walking Dead

-Anything Shakespeare: His plays aren't bad but they are written in an outlandish way that no one in this century can understand. Besides that, they never really could draw my interest.

-Wearing expensive brand name clothing: I don't think an explanation is necessary.

2. Not really, though when I dislike something I usually keep that opinion to myself

I know what you mean. I think the issue for me is much less listening to music in foreign languages in general, as much as the fact that it's pop music. I could appreciate extraordinary vocalist, but not understanding the lyrics in a pop song makes it all seem so pointless.

Yay, for serious people! Some stand-up comedians can amuse me, but I am nearly never getting in a good laugh when watching them.
Say no more. I already know exactly where you are coming from. On the subject of American or European football, basketball, or baseball, I have no problem admitting that I fall into the stereotype of gay males who are completely uninterested.

1) Celebrities and gossip. I don't give a shit about Starlet Starling and her second husband or her baby bod. Not important.

2) Indie dramas. It better be exceptional. Otherwise it's just faux-profound, painfully stilted dialogue running on for 2 hours.

3) Football/most sports. It's not life or death.

4) Twitter. Hashtags. #fuck them

I think that mine has to do with the absolute CRAZE behind so many new acts. I cannot stand it.
One minute, Taylor Swift is the biggest thing on the face of this planet.
Then oh wait, no, it's Lorde. No, sorry, I meant Justin Bieber. No, sorry, excuse me... I actually really meant _____.

I loved growing up and following just a few artists. It was great!

My frustrations seem to be that I can't find the purpose in it. For me, I love celebs - but I love the ones I genuinely like. Facebook? Yeah, I use it to stay in touch with people. Twitter? I use it to just have fun and be silly. Etc. Etc.

~~~ I don't think I've ever been hated upon.... unless online comments count! I really hate that. People are so rude anymore. I used to think I had reasonable thoughts, but god...everyone has an opinion that they think is BEST!
1. Kindles. Now admittedly I don't read nearly as much as I want/should do purely due to my lack of motivation to do so and having a busy schedule at the moment. But I really don't see a valid reason to spend upwards of £100 on a piece of technology that's only purpose is to make an ancient human activity somewhat more convenient. I understand that people want all their 'books' in one place, but we've survived for centuries with bog-standard paper books so I don't get the sudden craze. Supposedly people want them for when they go on a long vacation, but unless you're reading consistently every day I highly doubt you'll get through more than one or two books. And a couple of genuine books won't take up much space in your suitcase. Obviously Kindles are targeted more for the middle/upper class, but I still find them to be an embarrassingly large waste of money.
2. Hmm, I did get a bit of abuse for bashing Minecraft in its prime. I also get slightly mocked for knowing sod all about football, but I honestly couldn't care less about that because it's more of a personality trait than upright hate of the sport.
Football (fans). People talk about it in the same manner you'd talk about politics, and if anything more! I don't get how the game can be that deep to warrant such a big, lengthy argument over what manager should do what. I never did get why people supported clubs so fanatically anyway; most clubs don't even have any major local players and change rosters every year, so you're not supporting your local town or a particular way of doing things, you're supporting an abstract concept. Sure, it's great to support someone, and it's fantastic to love a sport, and it's good to have a conversation about it after a match, but not to the point people are talking about it 6 1/2 days a week and some are throwing insults and punches over it. I just wish some football fans would lighten up about the whole matter.
Facebook, Twitter, celebrity gossip, recent pop sensations, most TV shows, CoD, smartphone apps... there's a lot of things I just don't entirely understand. But I've never been criticised for it because I've never really registered myself on people's radar about these things. And I try my best not to be *that guy* who constantly nags others about why they like what they do.
TV.... For me I could take it or leave it. But I get crap for not watching whatever the flavor of the week show is. I am likely to get up after watching for a few minutes, turn it off and go do something else.
Sports as well...Oddly though, I am starting to see it as a way to build up my social status with co-workers and supervisors... While I don't really care to much about it, it might serve a purpose, but I truly don't give two shits about who beat who...
Fully agreeing with people who said football and anime, both are apparently a thing you must enjoy or you're a weirdo.
People go a bit fanatical over Doctor Who. I watch the show, (the new one, the old one's not something I'm terribly interested in even though people say it's better.)
Now I like the show, its a decent show, but I don't get why some people love it so much. Too many characters do stupid stuff and the writing gets really bad a lot for me to not get annoyed a lot by it. I think of it more as pretty good, but not great.
Of course, some of this might be because Star Trek and anything Whedon-related grabbed me first.
Doctor Who's a good show, but I just get peeved when people say its the best show. Its a bit pretentious of me to say there's better sci fi out there, but its probably because I'm bitter no one else watches Babylon 5.
Twitter, Facebook, Anime, all these things are obsessed over plenty by society in general but when it gets to teenagers... let's just say they kick it up a notch.
For example, I know at least two people, both my age, who watch at least 6+ hours of anime on school nights and easily triple that on weekends. Other friends of mine also watch ridiculous amounts, but not as much.
In general I really hate the assumption people my age seem to have that if you're into something, you're completely obsessed with it or faking it. That's where it always gets fanatical and so many of my friends have gotten mad at me because I'm not crazy about this book series or that TV show (Adventure Time in particular). Nowadays these things seem less like a 'fandom' and more like a cult to be honest.
1) Alcohol. I have not found a reason which justifies its use as a drinking substance other than it has been used for a drinking substance for a long time. It disgusts me to no end and the only person I don't leave when she drinks is my mother, but that's because she's no different when she drinks (I think she's immune to alcohol), and it's her house. Obviously I don't try to stop anyone, but if a friend wants to drink with me around, they can choose to spend the time with me or the booze. I dislike alcohol full-stop, and I look forward to the day when it will never cross the threshold of my home when I'm independent.
2) Yes, of course I've been criticised, but I've never expected someone to stop drinking because I want them to, only that if they want to get drunk, they're not doing it anywhere near me. And that results in being told I'm no fun sometimes, but most are fine with it. And I never confront strangers for it.
Not an insignificant issue or just a matter of personal taste, but that's definitely a social craze I don't like at all, even though I understand it (that doesn't mean I think it's reasonable)
1. Alcohol. I agree with the above. ^ It ruined my dad's childhood because my grandma was always drunk and sent him to a boarding school when he did nothing wrong, but she couldn't take care of him. As a result, he is one of the most angry, controlling people I know.
2. Twitter and texting-Both highly overrated. I seldom text, and twitter is mainly for celebrity stalking/worship.
