I'm 16, so legally I can obtain my learner's permit but I'm still sorta afraid of driving and all the dangers D: What age were you when you learned how to drive?

I haven't, and I really don't want to.. yet. Eventually, maybe, but not yet - it isn't necessary for getting around. Driving is damned expensive anyway, and I'm almost certain I would suffer from horrible road rage - the world is probably safer without me driving.

15 or 16, but I haven't been on the road in about 1.5 years and I only have a permit.

17 and 17. Driving is easy, nothing to worry about. Never even so much as scratched my car, I'm the person who sits on the outside lane of the motorway, can of Cola in hand swearing at people who dare to slow my progress.

Learned at 15, got my license at 16. They made it easy in Michigan, you took the classes in public school, no cost. That's probably changed now, but Michigan seems to want to encourage people to drive: No vehicle safety inspections, no emissions tests. I recall arriving here in Maryland, and finding all the tests odd, like something that only happened in California.

Now, though, I'm tired of driving...there is so much congestion between here and DC, all you do is sit in traffic, wasting half your life.

17 1/2 years old. Just before I started 12th grade, and the last chance to take driver's ed through the school in summer.

Never. My mom won't let me get a permit until she shells out hundreds of dollars on defensive driving classes, so never.

Twenty years ago, when I was 18. I can't stand driving, but it's essential for work.

When I was either nearly 17 or just into being 17. Which is funny kinda if you consider I had my learners permit for 6 months before I ever learnt how to drive. And I still am learning how to drive now. It's a very long boring process.

Whenever I was 13-14 my dad would take me over to my uncles to practice driving since he has his own land. Then at 15, I got my learners permit and started driving.

Around 12, in the back yard and a bit out in the country back roads.

When I was 4, I got the car keys and crashed the truck on the driveway. Let's just say that was my first driving lesson .

Around 12, my dad would let me drive in some abandoned back roads which is where I mostly learned all the rules.

I can only imagine that today's parents are responsible for making today's youth so bloody scared to learn to drive. I've heard about so many people your age (OP) who feel exactly as you do, and I just can't get my head around it.

When I was 14-20, you learned when you were 15.5 and got your license as soon as possible after you turned 16...it was the thing to do. Some people loved driving, others hated it...but we all did it, because we wanted and needed the independence.

Legally, I started at 15 and 9 months (the legal starting age in Canberra as of 2008 when I got my licence. I then got my P-plates at 17, and my full licence at 20.

However, my dad got me driving in abandoned carparks in his old Corolla when I was 10.

I learned to drive and got my permit at 15, was licensed at 16 and got a car later that year.

I love to drive honestly, probably more than I should.
