I don't really like that word for some reason. It reminds me of porn.

Some folks on the forum like the word and apply it to themselves. I don't think we should begrudge them that.

The problem with the whole "tranny" thing is all of that terminology got distorted by the pornography industry. That "tranny", "T", "TG", porn is really intersex porn.

I feel more comfortable with using transgender myself, but if someone who is T wants to use it I see no problem with it. I think some in the trans* community consider "tranny" a slur, not sure about that one.

I usually say 'trans' instead. In a medical context, I might use 'transsexual'. I dislike the connections some people make. I try sometimes, but I don't usually have time to educate people about it. I have neutral feelings towards the word... I used to hate it.

Definitely agree with you there. I get more pissed off at someone using that than someone using the f word to demean a gay person.

I try to steer away from that word and use trans* or transgender instead. Just sounds better to me, always have and always will.

    Transexual is so DSM-III .

I feel the term is too clinical and cold like "homosexual;" of course, I would use whatever term the person prefers.

There's only a few things that piss me off.
Using "tranny" and "shemale" is definitely a good way to piss me off.

Transsexual, however, is not a word that pisses me off. I use it because I don't like umbrella terms.
Sometimes, it's mistaken for a sexuality, but it's not that bad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but transsexual implies that all trans* people want to/will undergo gender reassignment surgery, which is false. That's why trans* is more inclusive, as it's a catch all phrase that fits all trans* people, regardless of whether or not they fall in the gender binary.

    But transsexual is a subset.

Yeah I understand that MtF/FtM fall under trans*, but vice-versa is not true. The latter is what people may think is true. There are trans* folks who don't have GRS yet still identify as the opposite gender. And then there are those that identify as both, fluid, neither, etc. So trans* fits them all since they're basically all not fully cisgender.

Eh... I don't particulary like the word transsexual, mainly because of it's connections with porn and people mistaking it for a sexual orientation (myself included).

I'm not trans*, so I can't really say anything.
If someone prefers to be called transsexual, I don't see anything wrong with it.
