I just don't understand why lesbians use so many labels. It's hard enough labeling my sexuality, why should I have to label anything else?

You don't. You are under no obligation what-so-ever to pick a label, but other people find it helpful.

You don't have to. I'm a lesbian and I don't use any other label besides that one unless It's necessary and I have to make a point.

I think bisexuals have a few more labels than lesbians as there's the whole romantic orientation too...although I know a few gay and lesbian individuals also use the romantic orientations too sometimes. But like ElliaOtaku said, you don't have to label yourself. Unless you feel it's going to help you.

You obviously haven't seen the plethora of labels that gay men use.

What can I say, everyone's obsessed with putting things into tiny little boxes.

Yeah, being named after a type of wild animal is hardly flattering.

@OP you don't *have* to label yourself as anything if you don't want to. Some people find it fun to fit into a specific niche and loudly broadcast their traits, preferences, etc. but it's far from being a requirement.

Labels are created so that we can describe ourselves, but if you don't want to have to put yourself into one specific category you don't have to. I don't put myself into a specific lesbian type because I don't believe that I fully fit into any one of the types. Its not like there is going to be a lesbian vocabulary test and we are going to start off with a survey where you are forced to pick which label you fall under.

I'm pretty sure gay men label at least as much. Ever heard of the hanky code?

I just use them as a way of describing myself.

I don't understand half the labels(if not more) as I only have a handful of gay friends and don't feel really connected at all to the local "gay community".

I personally was relieved to realize I was Femme, it answered so many of my questions. Like why I was so attracted to masculinity but still a lesbian for instance. Why it took me longer to realize I was gay and things of that nature. Some people don't use labels and that is fine also. It's whatever is comfortable for you. If you feel hemmed in and held down by a label, by all means do not use one.

You don't have to at all. I'm not a fan of labels myself. I'm a femme lesbian and that's the only label I use.
