Does Facebook Target You With Gay Ads?

    I always have these gay ads in my Facebook timeline (sponsored pages/posts), and even on the sidebar. The irony is that my orientation status on Facebook is straight (I have to keep up appearances with many people for work related reasons). I know I once read that Facebook sometimes targets gay ads to people who like certain pages (ex. Liking Britney Spears apparently signals that you may be gay). Anyway, does Facebook do this to you, and how do they "know" that I'm gay?

    Yeah, Facebook knows I'm gay. Reminds me of way back when we first got Tivo--you know how it makes suggestions... I got home one day and my husband greeted me at the door, obviously excited to blurt out "the TV figured out we're gay.":roflmao:

    They know because they have code that tracks your browsing history and generates ads that cater toward the user. I don't think Facebook necessarily uses the Interested In section for anything. But anyway, right now I get nothing because I have Adblock installed but normally, I get ads for condoms, HIV testing and the like. When I'm on mobile, I get ads to download those hookup apps.

    Yes, if you have looked at picture pages or talked about being gay/bi in messages to ANYONE, the gay ads will find you. :lol:

    Yes, I get them too. I'm not out on Facebook as anything and my gender is hidden from public, but they still know I'm a gay dude.

    The weirdest part though is that I don't "like" anything LGBT affiliated (well, until about a week ago), but I realized that occasional gay associated ad a while ago! Like this one page where you can buy gay pride stuff, and another advertising a gay gossip site. I'm not even into gossip sites...

    I get these too... lol and pride shop ads.... all over the internet, in fact the ad on the side of the youtube video im watching is a gay dating site.... Just one look at my pc and I guess anyone could tell im gay :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

    I will say before I got the ad blockers I found myself equally annoyed and amused by the ads for ChristianMingle, given that I'm gay and Jewish.

    I get ads for pride merch, but also for shoes, bras, life insurance, pretty much everything tame. Nothing sexy, despite my internet habits.
