USA or Europe?

I suppose all countries will have enclaves and pockets of homophobic people so I would say it depends where in a country you live. Living in a large California city may afford you better rights and such than, say, a small Greek village.

Basically, I would say: It depends.

 

Likely any place that has a huge gay pride festival is likely to be a good/better/more accepting place to live. Australia has a pretty amazing Gay Pride festival. Those of us in California certainly celebrate all over the state (there are probably 5-6 major city pride festivals)...

 

I took a wild guess based on the location you gave :lol:.

But, I agree on what was previously said about places that have large pride parades. If they're able to have those parades, at least there is some form of government approval and there's a healthy population of open LGBT folks.

 

I'd definitely say that Western Europe is best. Eastern? Not so much.

 

Scandinavia and UK are VERY accepting areas, and most of other Europe is too, its just a few areas ^.^

 

Sydney Mardi Gras is one of the biggest pride festivals in the world, yet the country still doesn't have marriage equality. Most major cities in Aus are very accepting and open though, and that's the main thing.
NZ is apparently very good too, and they DO have marriage equality.
Not sure if you want to travel that far though.

You were asking about US or EU though.
I agree that where there's a big pride festival, there's usually good LGBTIQ openness.

UK is pretty good (London and Brighton are amazing) and maybe Western EU countries but probably stick to the major cities.
For the US, probably New York and some places in California (as has been said).

Probably got less to do with the continent/country and more to do with the city/community/culture/people.

Europe and the US are so diverse that this question is almost pointless. Living in Paris and living in New York are roughly equivalent, but rural Poland isn't going to be the same as Paris, just as rural Texas isn't New York.

It depends on which specific locality.

 

Eastern Europe and Western Europe are like night and day. So you can't really take Europe as a whole in this instance.

But Western Europe and the Scandinavian countries definitely beat even the most liberal places in the U.S.

 

Western Europe I'd say.. Spain, Italy, UK and such

 

Western Europe in bigger/college cities. More rights, same attitude as in bigger/college cities in liberal parts in USA.

For the Netherlands most places are quite ok, even smaller villages and towns, unless you go into the bible belt (where you still have the same rights and protection, but the people might be a bit less friendly).

 

Is anyone else noticing a correlation between geography and acceptance/tolerance? Western Europe and the States vs Eastern Europe and the Eastern, Southern States? Coincidence?

Anyway, I'd say WE over WUSA. Even with legal protection, there are plenty of hate crimes that happen in places like San Francisco. The downside to being visible is people don't have to suspect - they know, making you an easier target.

 

Eastern Europe is that way because of Russia.

It's actually not. The countries who were under URSS had to spend years listening to anti-gay propaganda, traditional family values and similar stuff... back then lgbt community was already looked at badly and when Russians invaded and enforced that... well lets say it got to a point where it's hard to fight those ''traditions''.

If you google about this you would see that the least tolerant and most homophobic countries in EU are the ones that got touched by Russia. Pun intended.

 

The US is a big place. Europe is a big place.
It all depends on location. In each one, there will be places that are more homophobic than others and there will be places that are more accepting than others.

 

Western Europe and Northern Europe are clearly the best places to be with regards to LGTB rights.

 

I don't think this is true, I would say they are about equal.
