I go to the one for my community every year with my friends. Here I was last year:

Yes, I'm wearing a rainbow flag as a cape.

And then we ate gay cake.

The one here is pretty family friendly. Lots of music, people wearing silly clothes and having fun.

    Edit: Fixed image size

I've been every year for about the last twenty years. Here in Chicago ours is huge--the last few years it's been just shy of a million people. It lasts about three hours and it's all sorts of stuff--PFLAG, supportive churches, politicians and political organizations, all sorts of businesses, the gay cops are a big hit at ours but all sorts of professional organizations and businesses have a float or a marching section, all sorts of gay organizations will have a presence (we have everything from the sports leagues to the gay cheer squad, the gay drill team, different ethnic and service organizations, everything) and lots of colorful floats--usually the gay bars will do some of the most colorful, elaborate floats and some of them will have go go boy or girls on them.

Here all sorts of people attend--lots of straight people and quite a few families and children. Depending on where the individual parade you go to is it may be much smaller and less formal and a few are actually larger--some are set up more like fairs than parades (we do our fair the day before and there's a political rally after the parade). In my experience everyone is very festive, but there really don't tend to be the problems that I associate with large public events especially when people are drinking. Given the size and exuberance of the crowd it tends to be a remarkably well ordered event. You can't put a million people anywhere without a bad apple or two emerging, but I've never even seen anything serious go down in twenty years which I think is really saying something.

In my experience it's amazing to have a day to feel so dramatically part of something so varied and so much larger than myself. My partner and I make a point of going every year and have always enjoyed it.

I wish there were some around here...the closest one to me is two hours away, and I can't drive so I'd have to have someone else take me. And the only person I know tht I'd be comfortable going with isn't going to drive two hours away from home.

I've been to many, in different cities and countries.
They're mostly a big party and a celebration of freedom, passion and diversity.
Before I went to one, I had no idea that so many LBTIQ people (and supporters for equal rights/opportunity) existed. And that they exist in every type of culture, community, profession, family etc.. that you can think of. You can see it online and on TV, but it's nothing like seeing it live and in person.
If you have any specific questions about them, feel free to ask.

    Peace be with you.

That apostrophe is painful to behold.

I've been to a parade. It's nice. Lots of nearly naked people.

Yes, Montreal last year was my first ever (175,000 people attended!), I actually marched in the parade with a Jewish gay group. This year I plan to go to Toronto for the World Pride weekend at the end of June, they expect about 2 million people to attend!

I also look forward to marching again in Montreal's Pride parade this August.

It is exactly as OGS has described it above, a fantastically huge, festive and peaceful affair.

Yes; it was no big deal, mostly just people dressed like they do around here, nothing much stereotypically "gay" other than rainbow colored clothing accessories here and there. I wore a "Smile if you are gay" T-shirt; a lot of people smiled. (duh)
