Yesterday I performed with our choir in public for the first time, we had to dress in black and wear the matching choir neckties. The performance went really well.

Prior to the performance we all went down to the changing room and I was amazed to see how many grown men in their 30's and 40's who needed the help of others to tie their neckties!

Some were pre-knotting for others who then slipped it over their necks like some noose; while still others were struggling mightily (and stubbornly) to get it right.

It got me thinking...is this becoming a lost skill?

Personally, I hate ties, they might as well be a torture device, but I have to admit they look awfully good on certain occasions (I used to wear one to work every day, ugh!).

So...how many here know how to tie a necktie (there are several ways to do it, by the way)?

I can tie both bow ties and regular ties. I like a thick Windsor knot on a regular tie (if the tie has the right thickness for it, because some ties are more finicky).

It takes me 2 or 3 attempts before I get it right.

I'm a big fan of the half winchester knot, as I prefer a small knot. Don't know how to tie a bow tie

I disagree with the notion that people should be judged on their attire, and think the whole thing is utterly ridiculous. But I did attend a funeral a couple of years ago, and it wasn't worth the effort to stand up for my principles. And plus, I had a school uniform tie for a year. Oh, the injustice.

I wore ties every weekday for years, so never been a problem for me. My preference is the half windsor knot.

It also takes me several attempts, especially to get the length right and try to get a dimple.

Ah yes, the dimple! This is the thing that makes all the difference. LOL!

I'm not sure if I should vote "yes" or "no." Yes, I have done it. But it's been a long time, and when I still wore ties sometimes, it often took me several tries to get it work right. The knot was always fine. The problem was the length of the finished tied tie.

I am not even sure when I last actually wore a tie. It's probably been years. I don't particularly hate them, but, at the same time, it just never seems worth bothering with, either. My area is pretty casual.

Difficulties in tying a tie are nothing new. One of my high school teachers wore a tie regularly--probably every day. (He started teaching at a time when that was quite possibly not optional.) He could tie them, but was not very good. So he kept his regular ties tied. He'd loosen them enough to take them off, and then when he wore them again, slip the noose over his head, and tighten. Plus he had 2 clip on. Although he said it was a secret which ties were a clip-on. He worried that students would suddenly rip the clip-on off, I guess.

I've lessened (not eliminated!) the number of attempts by remembering to place the point of the tie's narrow end more or less at the fourth shirt button (from the top) prior to starting the knot. Works most times, but I can be fussy as well...

I can ballpark it, too, but the issue is that some of my ties have varying thicknesses and each of them require a different knot to tie well, so it's always fun (not really :lol:slight_smile: to play around so that the tip of the tie reaches right at the belt line.

The dimple, I have yet to master . I have some pictures in my album wearing a tie and I noticed how I still need to work on that aspect .

For those reasons, I actually now prefer bow ties because they are less fussy.

I have to say, some people think they can tie a neck tie, but really, they can't. The knot is all wrong and lacking shape and ends up slipping down so you can see the top button of the shirt.

Maybe it's better to leave it to those who actually know how? Or maybe I'm just a petty f**ker?

I do, strangely enough. And I'm a woman who doesn't wear ties.

After 12 years of wearing a school tie I'll never get it out of my head how to tie it.

I can tie ties, and it's not difficult at all. However, it takes a little effort to get a dimple, and I've more than once had to ask for my father's help with that.

I made a thread about this same topic a few weeks ago, actually,

But yes, I do know how to tie a tie; I can tie a four-in-hand.

I'm almost a master at it. Can get the perfect length and nearly the perfect dimple every time. On one occasion I was daring enough to try the Eldredge knot. It wasn't perfect and needed constant adjustment, but it looked pimp.
