I've been in a monogamous relationship with another man(teen) for six months now. Neither of us have ventured outside of the relationship in a sexual sense and beforehand we were both virgins. However I know people my age having sex with multiple people and live unhealthy (unclean) lifestyles who are far more likely to have AIDs than i do so there must be another reason right? The law is that I can not donate if i've had sex with a man within the last 12 months...

Because were aliens who could kill the human race with our blood.

I have always wondered this too.

Because there are still people who think that only gay men get aids.
Also, they test all the blood anyway so it's a stupid law

Maybe they think you'll turn people gay?

because most gay people have unsafe sex and might have HIV
well not most maybe they are less now but they just think like that
i really think instead of this stupid thing before they take someone blood why not test them and then see if they can donate blood or not
being gay doesn't mean you are born with HIV !

Prejudice and ignorance, as well as a sort of "marketing" to assure homophobes that the blood they are getting comes from "straight" people, "like them". LOL

    What?

    Is this real?

This is the first time I hear this stupid rule.

I know more straight people who are less keen (if you put it kindly) on safe sex.

Because people are stupid and that law really needs to be removed.

cus if you are HIV positive it may not show up for months so a blood test may not be accurate

So, from what i gather, the reason I cant donate blood and do my bit for society by saving lives is simply because of bigotry?

Yes. You know you're clean. Your blood can help people. It is morally right to do so.

Suppose so, I was wondering incase there was a genuine reason but apparently there is not...
I think the Green Party candidate in Brighton(UK) is addressing this issue at the moment actually.

No, there isn't a genuine reason. It isn't like there is a gay virus after all.

Is she? I didn't know that. Hope she does something, I know a lot of gay people who'd like to donate.

P.S, last time I went into the center of birmingham, there was a donation clinic on new street. It's probably still there.

Because our society still feels the need to live by the rules of the 80's AIDS pandemic, even though straight people are just as likely to have it, if not more so.

I agree with Hexagon. Just LIE. You're not doing anything wrong. There's a countless number of people out there who desperately need blood. All the blood is tested regardless, so it doesn't make a difference.

At least in the United States, the law was put in place in the 1980s before they knew how to test for HIV, (in 1989 I was tested for HTLV-3 by the US Army because it wasn't even called HIV yet). It also appeared to affect Gay people much more than straight people back then. The law has just never been changed since then. Since there is testing now, the it should be repealed.

On a side note, I can also not give blood because I was stationed in Germany with the US Army between 1980 and 1996. This was because of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Variant (vCJD); "Mad Cow Disease" I am pretty sure that if I were a carrier of that they would have caught it since I left Germany in 1992... I think 22 years is enough. In all their silliness though when I was back in Germany in 2000, they realized that there is a US Law against importing beef from Germany because of CJDv as well. They were getting beef from local farms for the Burger King restaurant on base. They realized that was the same as importing and had to start air lifting beef from the US to Ramstein AFB to supply Burger King.

It's very lucky. It makes rainbows come out of our arses. Hey, we might even find a pot of gold at the end. What could be luckier?
