Because we have to live with our parents possible disappointment for the rest of their lives. We can find new friends. Because we've formed a different kind of bond with our parents.
Also, especially for younger people, you may still have a greater dependence on your parents and the result of a negative reaction has the potential to be more life altering. Also, you tend to "choose" your friends and the reason they are your friends is because you get on well and have compatible personalities which can make them somewhat more accepting of certain things. Parents have desires for your life, friends don't. Parents can easily be disappointed, friends not so much
Friends are also your peers and they are statistically more likely to be "pro-gay" than the generation of your parents.
