How do you say the year? I say twenty-14 because all through the 1900s and before that is how a year was said. :/ I started doing it this way in 2010.

I say "twenty-fourteen," but will say "two thousand fourteen" in more formal situations.

I say two zero one four.

Just kidding. But it sounds pretty cool.

I personally say two thousand fourteen, though.

Twenty-fourteen I grew up going nineteen-eighty then nineteen-ninety. When it got to two thousand and one and two thousand and two I usually went the video game route like two-Kay-three or two-kay-four. Thank god I can simply go twenty-fourteen I highly doubt I'll be around long enough for twenty-one-oh-one.

    Twinny Fourteen.

That's how it sounds coming out of these Kentuckian lips, at least.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with enunciation issues . Depending on the mood, I will either slur it or pronounce it "properly."

It was nineteen seventy six when I was born, so following that logic it's now twenty fourteen.

    20 follows 19... I learnt that at school

I've always said, and still do say, nineteen-xx when referring to a year in the 20th century. For some reason I say two-thousand. Probably because it's still simple to say, whereas one-thousand nine-hundred ninety-nine, is a bit too much.

I used to have math teachers dig into me when I added the 'and'. I thought they were crazy, but now I'm like them. lol

My biggest "issue" with "and" is the fact that it can get confusing when writing checks. I started writing checks at a young age (parents would let me fill out all the data and then they would just sign them). In a check's line where you write out the amount in words, the "and" word serves to differentiate between the dollars and the cents (e.g. a check for $2,014.14 would have the amount written as "two thousand fourteen dollars and fourteen cents (or ...and 14/100)").

Later on, in school, I learned that "and" separates whole numbers from decimals . When possible, math is always easier when you put it in terms of money .

Of course, many young whippersnappers will never have to write a check, haha.

Are cheques still widely used in the US? The banks are almost desperate to do away with them here, but I'm clinging on to and still using my chequebook (sorry, a bit off topic)

I say Twenty-14, which is odd because last year I said Two-Thousand and 13.

My parents both have checking accounts but we use debit cards and electronic funds transfers most often. We pay utilities online but the checkbook will be used for certain bills where they charge you a service fee to use a debit/credit card (e.g. Property taxes).

Yeah, that sounds about right for the issue on 'and'. haha.

Not really. The only time that I ever use checks is when I'm giving money to someone in person, and don't have cash (still rare). Everything else gets paid online or with a debit card.
