    Hypothetical situation,

You crash on a desert island. You are somehow pretty much unscathed, but realise the plane is going to explode. There are a few items around you (listed below). You have to make a snap decision and only have time to grab one. Which would you grab and why?

    1. A large knife
    2. A torch
    3. A small medical kit which includes some bandages and disinfectant
    4. A saucepan
    5. A box of matches
    6. A small box with 3 days worth of food in it
    7. A box containing goggles, a snorkel and flippers
    8. A blanket

So, which do you think will he'll ensure your survival for as long as possible until rescue arrives

    Happy days

I'm going to have to vote knife. I think it would prove to be most useful in making other tools to aid my survival, not to mention self defense and hunting, if I absolutely cannot survive on plants.

    2. A torch - I am somewhat familiar with how to make a fire, and regardless, given that about half the time it will be day, this is really sacrificing something else I'd need.
    3. A small medical kit which includes some bandages and disinfectant - I'd imagine seawater would make a suitable disinfectant, and if I need a bandage I'm probably screwed anyway.
    4. A saucepan - knife would be more helpful in actually getting the food to put in there
    5. A box of matches - see no. 2
    6. A small box with 3 days worth of food in it - only lasts three days.
    7. A box containing goggles, a snorkel and flippers - bah
    8. A blanket - this would be nice, I admit. But perhaps not essential. I'm hoping I'll still have my clothes, at any rate.

  3. Probably the knife to be honest. It's useful for a number of different things and instrumental in helping me get other things that I need--like food, shelter etc. Or to be used in self-defense.

Everything else would run out eventually (like the med kit, matches, the torch or the food), whereas as long as I can sharpen it and hold onto it, the knife is more indefinite.
Lots of the other things just all around wouldn't be able to be used for more than one thing (like the torch, the saucepan or the blanket)

What in the world would you use the snorkeling gear for? Maybe I'm just unimaginative, but that seems like it wouldn't be terribly helpful.

A blanket. I'm not sure what the climate is meant to be like, but if it's hot, it provides shade. If it's cold, it provides warmth. If the island is hot during the day and cold at night, I'd probably die without it much sooner.

To be realistic.... I'd probably just panic, not grab anything and explode along the plane. Being realistic here, as I know I am a coward.

A saucepan I guess. It would make distilling drinking water a lot easier.
I know how to make a fire so I don't have to take the box of matches.
I don't eat animals, probably wouldn't even on a deserted island, so, no need for a knife. I can just collect my food. If I really needed something with an edge I could sharpen some rocks.
A medical kit would come in handy in case of an emergency, but I doubt there'd be a lot of emergencies.

But I've got to say, I wouldn't really count on being rescued, I'd rather try my best to thrive on the island.

I'd choose the knife. It could help with food and shelter.

In a rush I'd probably grab the box of food and hope I'll get rescued within the 3 days worth of food. If not, I'm probably able to collect some kind of food with my bare hands.

The knife. Medical supplies would be a close second (especially if the kit is more extensive than simply bandages and disinfectant).

That said, I'd drop all of that in a heartbeat for a sat phone .

I said a Med Kit.... Knowing my clumsiness I'd hurt myself and need it. I could go without a knife, plus if I had one I'd cut myself on it and need the Med Kit.

The knife probably, as others have said. Though when watching survival shows people seem to have the biggest problems with fire. Since it's just matches I wouldn't chose that even considering the lack of fire making skills people myself included have. Now if it was a flint and steel I would have quite the choice to make.
