So my mom and I were watching tv last night and one of the characters is gay and his mom is not accepting of him so while the mom was telling the son in the show that he has to find a girl and what not and he can't be gay in her house . My mom was saying words like you can't change him , she's so mean , how can someone be that mean . Now when ever a woman comes on tv and says she's lesbian I hear my mom say this how can she be gay , what's so great about another woman , how can a woman like another woman she must be stupid , She needs some dick some men should F:***:k her so she can act right . Oh that's disgusting these women are terrible . I even heard my mom say once that she wished she had a gay son :tantrum: Now I'm wondering why is a gay man ok with some people but not a lesbian . ? why the double standard .
It's not always like that, but usually, the person criticizing only feels that their orientation is valid. They don't 'get' how someone can be attracted to the sex they're not attracted to.
I've only ever seen this double standard in the other direction. Perhaps she's stuck on the way she personally feels attraction.
I'm beginning to think your mother projects her beliefs on others, especially the closer to her they are. For example, you're her daughter, which is really, really close. A woman is, well, a woman like her. In a way, it may be some kind of self-defense mechanism, or she just uses any opportunity similar to your sexuality, to drill home her disapproval of it.
Simple people are stupid and stupid people say and do stupid things ,when they say or do stupid things, don't be surprised and move on, it's not always good for your mental health to try to understand them. This has been a public service announcement.
My mom's like that too. She's not really okay with homosexuality with guys or girls, but she's more accepting of guys. She's watched TV shows with gay couples and been perfectly okay with it. But if there are lesbian couples then she yells "Gross!" or rants that lesbian kissing on TV is only to appeal to male viewers.
I think It's mainly a general thing that straight people are more tolerant of gay people if they like the same sex as each other. Straight guys like lesbians and dislike gay men, straight women like gay men and dislike lesbians. It's not a general 'all straight people are this way' thing though, just that's what I noticed with the double standards.
I've seen double standards go both ways.. I've heard the argument "lesbians are more accepted!" In a porn world, but on like regular tv viewing, the "Gays are more accepted!" Is the argument I get. I guess it varies person to person, along with place to place..?
