I feel like all the online & media representations of LGBT folks show these hyper-sexual, outlandish characters too much of the time...until it's to the point where that's all that some cis & straight folks (as well as we!) see.

I mean, if I were to measure myself in some way against the LGBT vloggers I've seen, for instance, I would think that I lived a sub-par, terribly dull and somehow inadequate? existence.

But yet when we talk on here, most of us I see as incredibly "average/normal." (In a GOOD way. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: ) I mean, I can relate to you guys! I cannot relate to these vloggers I see online & characters I see on TV and representations in the media.

So: What can we, the average Joes and Josephines, do to represent?

    I'm serious! It's a serious question.

Like, do I seriously need to make my own horribly boring vlog and make sure I tag every vid with "LGBT" so that people know that I'm a 'normal' person, totally boring, just like them - and yet a bisexual woman?

Meanwhile: If you are LGBT and have a vlog, do us a favor: Could you be a little bit more boring? Less fabulousness and stunts please...less titillation...more cleaning the toilet and grocery shopping and angsting over student loans? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Thanks!

No. I mean, sure, you're welcome to run the most boring blog ever, and you're welcome to tag it as whatever you want. But don't expect us to quell our queer spirit for the sake of a little false acceptance. Our community is far from perfect, but what I respect in it is a freedom of thought and expression that is basically the only reason I'm willing to participate in it.

It saddens me a great deal that this is such an ideal for many in the LGBT community. No straight vlogger has ever put up their vlog with the intention of being boring--many of them are mistaken in thinking they are interesting but they all hope/think they are interesting. I in many respects am pretty average and I suppose in the grand scheme of things I am a pretty boring gay guy--but I'm rather exceptional in a variety of ways and I certainly don't aspire to be boring/normal. I honestly don't understand why others do.

I think what happens is that the fabulous outlandish LGBT people are the only ones who take the time to make vlogs and what not, and 'normal' people are busy doing normal things.

And ultimately, vlogs are made to pass time and entertain some other people. If it isn't entertaining, many people won't want to do/watch it. There's not really much point in making videos showing everyday tasks and jobs and making out that they're somehow special just because the person doing them isn't straight.

I know what you mean though, many LGBT people are not necessarily the superactive crazy creative people that the media portrays them as. But changing vlogs probably isn't the right way to change this image because if they change and become more 'normal' no one will watch them, and the whole reason they're made in the first place is to be watched.

    This is exactly my point.

I already thirst for the day when people will be like: "You have a gay themed vlog? *yawn*"

When no one gives a shit.

    Because honestly...

There is nothing inherently "special" to give a shit about. (Because it's normal.)

I'm tired of being sensationalized, already!

But being treated well doesn't come from pretending we're no different. Normality isn't achieved by only getting a shallow tolerance by conforming. Sure, let "normal" queers get our representation, but don't ever take away the legitimacy, worth, and right to represent of those who don't conform.

I'm totally boring and not hyper sexual! I hate that stereotype of how all gay people are party animals, hyper sexual beings who sleep around with everyone.

Look, people make vlogs because they have something to say. Queer vlogs are not defined by the fact that they're made by queers, but because they're about queer issues. You cannot have a queer vlog about your breakfast. That would be a breakfast vlog. I, a queer, can make a vlog about anarchy, but that doesn't make it a queer vlog. The reason queer vlogs represent certain types of people is because they want to talk about the things they do. If you don't like, don't watch.

    What's wrong with sleeping around?

I think that you have the right intentions, in that you want to show the world that "hey, not all of us are like the gay version of Glenn Quagmire, and are incredibly promiscuous. I mean, if you say that you're a boring person to begin with, that's fine, but no one is going to watch a vlog, whether it is gay or straight, if the content is deemed to be boring. I think that you should make your vlog exciting, yet you can show that there are the Joes and Josephines, which you just mentioned, in the gay world. I'm trying to look at this from a distance and weigh both sides. It shouldn't come down to either we're incredibly boring and mundane or hypersexual to the max. There should be a way for someone to show that those Joes and Josephines can have fun and emanate happiness without resorting to lecherous, promiscuous, stereotypical behavior.

While I do think that 'boring' LGBTs need to be represented, we're not as entertaining to the media. We'll just be overlooked. The media wants flaming, fabulous, entertaining LGBT folks. That's how they want us to be seen. Unless someone's really out to show the world how much we're like everyone else, I doubt it'll happen any time soon.

    P.S. Note how it is:

    *NOT fabulous
    *NOT that interesting
    *NOT hypersexual
    *most definitely queer

I think we should just let the close-minded people feel stupid when they finally open their eyes to the real world.

EDIT: Sorry, that sounded harsh. I mean to just let people see for themselves. I, personally, find it satisfying when someone gets surprised that I don't fit a stereotype, although it does get annoying sometimes.

And besides, the media is literally for entertainment.

Omg I am so glad you made this thread thank you thank you thank you
Many times when people find out I'm lesbian and even online when I have met some straight dudes they ask me questions and assume I'm some lesbian porno princess alike I'm hyper sexual and excuse my language think all we lesbians do is get together have tickle fights and lick each others P:***:ies all day , when they find out I'm a normal person like them and not hyper sexual it's like I shattered their dreams and they will say like on tv I see lesbians having crazy sex and sleeping around and in porn , sometimes it seems like their sadden that I'm not hyper sexual at all .
This is what I get asked and I should have put this in the other thread but I just remembered
" so your a lesbian do you have sex with random women everyday ? "
It's just like what the hell do you take me for a fucking porn star :tantrum:

Looking a bit wild is not sexualized in any way shape or form. It's just the person being unique. Other than my hair I dress rather conservative and usually get odd looks when I mention loving heavy metal, etc. So hey it's individual expression, and needs not be tamed.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's pretty disheartening.
