Hey so I'm pretty new here and this is the first thread I've started, so bear with my awkwardness. Basically, I'm an 18 year old girl, and I really like other girls. However, I find the word 'lesbian' really weird, and it makes me uncomfortable, for reasons unknown. Just wondering if anyone else out there feels the same way, or if it's just me being weird and unable to accept myself? :rolle:

I'm okay with the word gay! Like, despite being a girl, I'd find it easier to say 'I'm gay' than I would to say 'I'm a lesbian'... Weird right?

Not really weird. I don't like the word "lesbian" either. Has nothing to do with the meaning and everything to do with the way it sounds. I can't really explain it beyond that. What if you used "gay" to identify instead?

weird I was just thinking about that and I totally agree it is weird to me to but I never say anything aloud but still I think saying I'm gay sounds better and easier

I also don't like it. I hate the way it sounds. But it sucks for me, because in my native language, you can't say you are gay if you are a woman. Male - gay, Female - lesbian. Fu*k grammar lol.

For some reason I don't mind the word lesbian in English, but I hate it in my own language. And we have the same problem in Dutch... Gay guy = homo, gay woman = lesbisch or lesbienne. And yes, I know women can use homo(sexual) but personally I wouldn't use that to describe myself. So... I usually just use the word gay. People know what it means, so it works.

You could just say that you're gay or just like other women. That is entirely up to your discretion.

Exactly this. Moreover in my native language the word sounds like some kind of a disease.

Does anyone actually like that word? I always use the word "homo". It makes me want to puch someone when they call me a lesbian.. It's just so awful

I didn't like the word either when I first realized I was lesbian and I still called myself bisexual even then for a while but I should have just say I was gay .
It was really hard for me for years to get use to the word even though at the time I didn't think I could be a lesbian even though I had no attraction to the opposite sex I was still holding out that maybe one day I would like a guy

I don't like the word either but I've kind of got used to it now. The word sounded really sick to me at first, just because of the way it sounds.

"Lesbian" has a weird sound to it, but it has a very rich history behind it, so that's one reason to like it.

I've gotten used to it like I used to feel the same way. try using it jokingly or ironically or watching a really gay tv show and being like "haha those LESBIANS" then u get used to it
