Where I live people swear all the time, it's kinda part of our culture. In fact when a movie or a tv series doesn't have a lot of filthy words it feels artificial

When I was a kid I avoided saying those words because I was raised that way, as I grew older I started to swear like a sailor and now I can't stop doing it lol! :***:

I need advice on this one too. I grew up listening to my parents swear a lot as well the music I listen to lol and I just kind of picked it up over time I guess.

Eh...I just found other words to substitute those words or don't see a need for them THAT often. I still swear just not as much as I used to.

You don't stop. Ever. I throw around curse words as casually as I say "Hi".

I just like them, and any times I've tried to self-censor failed miserably

  5. Why do you need to stop?

I guess I don't understand what the problem is with swearing. "Swears" are just words. For every word there's an appropriate situation to use it in, it's all about context--it's what you're saying and who you're saying it to and why you're saying it etc. That goes for every word, not just arbitrary "bad" ones. I mean, there's appropriate language for different situations like in the workplace, around children, etc, but that should be easy enough, just be careful before you talk.

Otherwise, why would you need to stop swearing?

But I used to avoid them, I used to be very classy

I just picked that up because I though I sounded "cool" and "rebel"

Try to imagine that you're in a job interview. Would they hire you if you used words like those? I would substitute words for the bad ones that you use now. That way, you can make it a habit. Also, a swear jar never hurt anyone.

Some people would want to stop impulsively swearing because they don't want to sound like a sailor...they want to sound like a refined adult or a professional. Some want to be a professional, and realize that professionals don't talk like that (at least not all the time...I'm sorry, but it just wouldn't do to have your doctor trying to sensitively break the news to you about your fuckin' cancer that's going to give you 3 goddamned weeks, maybe four at the motherfuckin' outside). And some want to stop it, because it's an addiction, a loss of control, and they don't like that loss of control.

You certainly can regain that control. The first step (as with anything) is wanting to...it sounds like you (edy and Ace) are there. The second step is trying. Now here's a secret that worked for me when I was Ace's age and had the same problem...strange as it may sound. If you're honestly upset with yourself for swearing, then each time you swear, apologize to yourself. Not out loud where others can hear it, but quietly, under your breath or even inside your head...but apologize deliberately and sincerely. You may feel a little silly doing it...and that's what makes it more likely that you'll remember and not do it next time...or the next. It takes a while to get rid of it completely...but it can go.

I'd be curious to hear if you try it and if it helps you at all. Good luck!

I don't really know why people use profane language, I've never had the need or desire to do so, but I guess i'm quite strange

Now, I may swear more than all my friends combined, but I do have some sort of filter.
Putting thought into your words can help you stop swearing (and make you more concise!).

  17. There are a number of things to consider.

Firstly, swearing varies a lot in degree.
Under different circumstances, different words may or may not be acceptable.
Context in these circumstances is everything.
Knowing a lot of swear words is no indication of a poor vocabulary.
One must judge people on more than just a swear-count in their utterances.
Furthermore people who swear in one situation might not cuss at all in another.
Finally, see what I did there?

Think first, speak after. That'll help a lot with the swearing.

I never swore a lot but I drastically reduced it when I began increasing my vocabulary. It gets kind of dull when everything is fucking great or so fucking good.
There are so many words in the world, why restrain yourself to just a few?

I love swearing too fucking much to ever stop.
It gets my sodding point across so much better than speaking like a pansy.

I -can- speak without any swear words just fine, but 99% of the time, I just don't -want- to.
And it doesn't have anything to do with a lacking vocabulary.

    Think before you speak.

But I don't see the good in censoring yourself. There's nothing wrong with swearing.
