Religious people usually say 6,000 years and everybody else usually say millions of years. I personally don't care, the fact is that the world does indeed exist no matter how old it is. I'm still curious about this topic, however...

Considering the field I'm interested in is astrophysics, I do care how old the universe is. If I recall correctly, it's about 13.8 billion years old.

According to Dr Brian Cox, the Universe isn't even 1% of the age it will be when it ends.

Well, the most popular reckoning in the world of physics is about 13.8 billion years. It's per a model, though, and I wouldn't be shocked to see the number change if/when new discoveries are made.

You took the words out of my mouth.

Whenever I hear someone say "the universe is 6,000 years old", I immidiately disregard everything they say. I could understand a 5 year old believing that, but an adult believing it is just extremely sad...

Agreeing with the posted answers, evidence suggests the universe is between 13.5 - 14 billion years old.

Anyone who thinks it is 6000 years old is seriously deluded and is believing yet another bit out ludicrously ridiculous religious nonsense.

    Happy days

Some folks think the universe is 2,014 years old. Just saying.

I refuse to respect anyone who believes earth is 6000 years old or less than. Especially when you can drive down to a museum and see physical proof of organisms that are millions of years old.

Nope, they were made by Gaaawd to test the people against the evil forces of Sataaaaan!
The earth is 6000 years old, and it will always be 6000 years old because that is the will of gaaawd!
Now excuse me, i'm going to a soldier's funeral to say some really offensive shit.

It's actually 1.4 x 10^-88 % of the life time of the universe lol So essentially the universe is beginning now. And that's if the universe dies via heat death. Considering the acceleration of the expansion of the universe it seems likely to be the way the universe dies.

Also it isn't a matter of what people think. But how old is it actually. People who think the universe is 6000 years old need to stop reading the bible and start reading a real science book.

If I may, I'll quote (with some liberty taken, as the grammar and lack of punctuation is horrendous, and bringing it up to par) something from my Facebook feed:

" Evolution is just a theory! A theory, people! There is no way we evolved from monkeys, in just 2,014 years! Only God, could make all of this, in that long. Jesus didn't die those 2,000 years ago, to be called a dumb monkey! Grow up! "

Now, you may be asking: Kaiser, why do you have someone like this, on your Facebook?

That's a good question. But, see, this is the thing. I like to know what the opposition is capable of, what they are thinking, and what they are doing. In this case, the religious extreme, is what I'm keeping tabs on.

I believe, that studying something as complex as the universe, and having in account the limits in science.... The universe is probably much more older than what studies say

Oi, but you have to keep pace with the smarter apologists:

I would also note that young-earth creationism seems to be a kind of fringe position in the Christian community, but I can't find hard data on that.

In some aspects, I suppose. I do know some relatively intelligent religious people. This forum has them, for example. Interestingly, one of the most scientifically intelligent people I know, is very much a Christian. You wouldn't think that, with the field he studies and excels in, but he is.

I tend to keep tabs on things because, quite frankly, I don't like being caught off guard, if I can help it. One step ahead, as Aladdin says!

Keeping pace with any 'smart' individuals, is beneficial, to a degree. You can come to better understand another position, be it to accept it, or to deal with it. Besides, as Napoleon Bonaparte once said: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." You need to know how potential opposition operates and acts, or else you're not going to be able to make a stand, let alone counter.
