What does it mean? Should I be flattered?

I'd be flattered, the cello is a very beautiful sounding instrument.

The cello is my favorite instrument, so I would definitely take it as a compliment! It makes a beautiful sound.

That's harsh maybe he was frustrated that he wasn't patient enough to be a good teacher

A cello makes a deep, rich, soulful sound. As others have said, it's generally considered to be one of the most beautiful sounding instruments and a lot of people find that cello music is particularly good at putting them in touch with their emotions. So, I would definitely say that it was a compliment.
