I have learned first aid from school and advanced first aid off of my mum when she did a course. I have only ever had to use it once when someone fell down the stairs at school. I had to check their breathing and pulse and put them in the recovery position and ask someone to quickly fetch the nurse. It was quite scary.

Do you know and have you had to use first aid?

I know first aid and military first aid (there's not much of a difference, but you learn how to deal with chemical environments). I'm a medstudent, so I think it's necessary xD

EDIT: No, I never had to use first aid, except for a teeny tiny incident at a party where I had to apply the Heimlich Maneuver.

Nope, my school has never taught me that, nor my parents. I never really thought about it enough to look it up online, either. Should probably do that...

I have some advanced courses from University and what I know from my time in the service. A little like andreih, but certainly not a medical student. I could not personally deal with that on a day to day basis. But I do applaud those who can.

I want to do a first aid course but it is $300. I read my first aid book for fun when I am bored.

I renew my first aid every year as part of my job but for me it always feels a bit scary when someone brings something different. It feels like a big responsibility so I always make sure when I need to that I have another first aider and then we can reason things out together. I hated going home wondering if I did the right thing and if the person was ok. It is also surprising how things change within that year too, only fractionally but as medical facts turn up and are passed on it obviously changes expectations and procedures a little.
Well done you for being able to remember what you had to do in an accident situation, there's a lot to be said for keeping a cool head and not everyone can do it.

I learned about it in high school and my teacher would demonstrate for the class on a dummy but I haven't performed it on anyone...I'm not exactly qualified.

I am an America Red Cross trained first responder. Trained in first aid, CPR, and to use an AED (automated emergency defibrilator ). :eusa_doh:

My certification is expired, but I still know it. If you.are trained, whether the card is current or not, you should put it on your resume that you're trained if you've been trained.

No, I've never been taught and there hasn't really been any opportunity to learn either

First AID/CPR/AED certified or was. Never had to use it. Learned it since step dad has seizures.

Not at all. But luckily I've never been in a situation where I should've known first aid.

I have been certified since about 1980. Originally through Boy Scouts of America, then the US Army. Now my employer pays for anyone who wants to stay CPR/First Aid certified.

Almost had to use it once, saw an ultralight airplane crash. Someone else who was there was a certified nurse and took charge. Patient died anyway after being airlifted to the hospital.

One of those things, I will always stay certified an hope I never need it.

I know only a little bit. Otherwise, I probably need to take a course on it so that way, I can prepare myself for bad and unforeseen scenarios where I'd have to use it.

Yes. After all, I do work in a hospital. I also have done basic life support and paediatric basic life support on top of my many clinical duties as a radiographer.

    Happy days

No. If someone was dying, I would be more than useless - except for calling 999.

I'm not entirely sure what the differences are. I never got first aid training. However, as a soldier I receive Combat Life Saver training on a regular basis. It mostly concerns the application of pressure bandages, tourniquets, and splints. It also trains us in different carries and dragging techniques as well as treatment and diagnosis of a handful of injuries; traumatic brain injuries and tension pnemothorax? Not sure on spelling, but it deals with lung collapse.
