I was wondering if anyone else donates to any pro LGBT rights groups, such as the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) or the ACLU. (American Civil Liberties Union) Because there's so many important causes to be addressed, and, indeed, perhaps the most important SCOTUS decision ever in terms of marriage equality looming on the horizon, I joined the HRC today, and am donating $10 per month, over the next year. It's not a lot, but I feel like we need to fight the big money being spent by the opposition. I'd donate more if I made more, and perhaps will step up the amount. It's not tax deductable, because they do lobby. But I figure I waste money on much more frivolous things, and this is an important set of issues to help with. So does anyone else donate to any LGBT or human rights based charities? I'm also thinking of joining the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center), for all of the amazing work they've done tracking and bring cases against hate groups. Today I decided I want to help groups that take actual legal action to advance rights; I certainly spend enough time talking about the subject! I don't wanna 'brag' but it does feel good to do something charitable; I was thinking that for all the help these groups have offered, I'd like to show my thanks.
In addition to donating to the HRC, I also donate money and time, and serve on the board of Wyoming Equality. We are the primary gay rights organization in Wyoming, and we are listed as one of the plaintiffs in Courage v Wyoming the case attempting to overturn Wyoming's ban on same sex marriage.
My partner donates to HRC on our behalf and we have both recently been doing some volunteer work for our local LGBT center. Todd
That's great to hear, and I wish you success! I'm also looking to do some volunteering, possibly with the HRC, because I live Baltimore, but work just several miles outside of their DC headquarters. Maybe I could help answer phones, or something along those lines. Oh, and I love the name of your case: Courage V. Wyoming. We need courage, to help us through. I also just joined the SPLC, at the same level, after looking at the list of cases they're working on. The lady on the phone had the sweetest Alabama accent. I have a soft spot for southern accents. (Their headquarters are in Montgomery)
My partner and I donate financially to Lambda Legal and HRC. We used to donate time as well (principally with Equality Illinois) but we have reached that stage in life where it sometimes seems like money is easier to come by than time. We really should try to make volunteering a bigger priority.
I do a charity run every year for a LGBTQ youth charity. It has to be run in high heels. You can see pictures in my gallery to see how I completed the ensemble each year. I'm doing the run again in a few weeks. Stay tuned to find out which team I'm sporting this year. Lex
I donated $5 to HRC this morning for an equality wristband. I'm poor, so I can't donate more and that was on a giftcard left over from Christmas.
I donate to the HRC. My job has it set up where we can donate directly out of our paychecks; so I don't even notice it. I also donate to two other organizations one is environmental and the other is health related.
I haven't donated to HRC, but I want to. I also want to buy a Tshirt from them, but feel I wouldn't be able to wear it anywhere.
Yes, When it is possible I am always trying to be active person of giving to many good causes. The homless kitchen in our town, to the HRC, angel babies, breast cancer awarness and others. I dont not have to pour a bucket of ice over my head to do it.. I am sorry but its is getting quite tired some seeing it all over online.
I've donated to HRC, GLAAD, the Trevor Project, ACLU, SPLC, Have A Gay Day, Equality Missouri, PROMO, and the Stonewall Democrats.
