I'm in a morbid mood, so what is in your opinion the worst way to die?
Mine would be fatal familial insomnia. It's basically a hereditary disease that starts showing symptoms usually around 50. The symptoms are a steadily worsening insomnia, with total inability to sleep for the last few months, which cause paranoia, phobias, panic attacks, hallucination, dementia, and eventually death.

    IDEA: Burning to death.

LOOPHOLE: At a high enough temperature, the nerve endings in your body would tear apart, preventing you from feeling any pain.

I'm 'torn' between being burned alive or buried alive.

I would say being buried alive because you would be sitting there with nothing to do for ageeees.

Plane crashes are also rather ugly. It gives you so much time to be terrified, and it turns out most people don't die from the impact, rather their eggs break and they are, as mentioned above, burned alive.

Cancer, and other similar diseases that cause pain and suffering for a long time before death. I am speaking as someone who has lost 3 grandparents, both parents and an uncle to this awful disease...

Being burnt alive. Being buried alive seems terrifying as well - especially if you're in total darkness.

There was a story of this girl who got drunk and went exploring some underground caves in Ukraine and ended up getting lost because it was completely dark with no light at all. She died pretty quickly because she had no water. Just imagine being lost in a labyrinth of caves, in total darkness, no food or water - even if you had water, you would probably become insane and die anyway.

Their eggs break? Am I being slack? Lol.

I read that if the plane falls apart midair, then the change in air pressure will often kill the people instantly.

*Legs. As for the pressure difference, it would have to be very, very extreme. Even in space, you'd die of suffocation before pressure, and the only real problems that would affect you relatively fast would be ripped alveoli, and that would need a very, very large pressure difference, so possibly with very high altitude planes you'd die of ripped alveoli before you crash.

Plane crashes are also extremely rare in comparison to how many flights take of and land per year.

Every time you fly, you increase your chances of being killed on a flight...

So, I think this completely fascinating, because my fear of death has nothing to with actually being dead. The fear of death for me is really the fear of the suffering before death. So, anything that maximizes the duration and intensity of suffering before I finally do die is a "worst way" to go.

Burning is pretty horrific, but I recall reading somewhere if somebody drops you in boiling water, you'll die in about six seconds. Water has a really high specific heat, so it imparts a lot of energy, and being completely submerged in water would actually kill a person surprisingly quickly. But I would imagine the pain to be incredible. :frowning2:

My final answer to the question though is going to be suffocation. I have been hospitalized twice for serious respiratory distress. Both times it was because I forgot my rescue inhaler when I was doing strenuous physical activity. Both times, I thought I was going to die, and I felt completely helpless. :frowning2:

Something slow and painful like starving, or terminal illness maybe

Drowning, burned alive, or a terminal illness.
