So I had a comment from one of my friends, which I came out to today (lucky number 30th ) He said that I'm not really that masculine, but look straight. That although my voice was deep, I wasn't that though in terms of body type (apparently you need big muscles)... okay?

So he basically said that he was surprised, completely bewildered, and when I told him if it was because I was masculine he said - "No, you're just completely straight looking, but I never saw you as masculine."

Is there really a difference between masculine gays and straight looking ones? :eusa_doh:

A masculine gay guy is SLIGHTLY more effeminate, ALWAYS

Masculine straight guys are 0% effeminate

    No, not really.

Some guys who read comics, awkward in class, and don't go out to parties much seem like your typical straight guy, but aren't masculine.

Being buff, in shape, playing a sport, going to parties, being good with the ladies is typically considered your average masculine straight guy.

And you can do the same for gays.

a typical gay can be in shape, play a sport, go to parties, be good with the laddies, and be your typical gay. he can be masculine.

and a feminine gay too, being into fashion, possibly into shape, always hanging with the girls, etc.

Some people are in the middle between masculinity and femininity, though don't look straight. or gay too.

I hope this makes sense. xD

This whole stereotypical "what's a gay guy supposed to look like" is so stupid. Gay or straight has nothing to do with masculinity.

You could be a cis identifying male who wears dresses and makeup but are still straight as an arrow. Or you could be a big hulking jock dude bro slamming beer while watching the game yet prefer the company of other men.

I guess. I mean I go the gym, play sports and am in good shape according to my BMI, but definitely not bulky like gym rats. I guess that's what he meant, perhaps?

    He probably meant that.

But then again, your sexuality doesn't determine your social self. masculinity vs feminity and everything in between.

People think it does with the standards and stereotypes there are.

I agree, I'd like to be called - gay. That's it. But every time I come out this happens, and it annoys me because people believe I'm making stuff up. It didn't bother me so much a week ago, but now it's. Jeez, things are getting harder for me since coming out, but I remain positive!

And being willing to deal with your emotions means you always take it and are an absolute wimp and pushover too, right?

Exactly. You're gay. That defines nothing else about you besides you like other guys. Dude you don't have to prove anything to anyone.

My guess is that guys notice when someone in their group doesn't often talk about women & girlfriends, or about how smoking hot certain female celebrities are, or about their sexual exploits with the opposite sex.

It might be that he noticed that about you. Or I might be talking out of my arse.

I have met people like that.

And also, my friend is straight and is about as feminine as you can get.

    lol you're crazy

The answer is that not all people who appear straight would also be described as being particularly masculine; most of my friends aren't especially masculine despite being straight the two are not synonymous. I guess you need to be hench drink beer and play sport to be masculine, something like that

I totally agree with Supreme Commander Kasey.

What is the relation between liking another man and acting effeminate (or vice-versa, or another combination)?

    Nooo

    Masculinity does not equal heterosexuality

    Masculinity does not equal homosexuality.

    Femininity does not equal heterosexuality.

    Femininity does not equal homosexuality.

Just because you haven't met a gay man who is 100% masculine, doesn't mean they don't exist. And to claim that everyone is a 100% absolute black and white masculine or feminine is absurd.

It's safe to say people lean one way or another, or some are proud to be masculine or proud to me feminine. It's all about how you're socially brought up and what your brain deciphers as a child and even what you decipher now decides where you lay on the spectrum.

And, to also equate masculinity with being a male or femininity with being female is another huge mistake.

These are all 3 separate identities humans have.
