One thing I learned today in my Latin I class in high school, is that Expecto Patronum from Harry Potter actually means Im expecting my lawyer. Does Harry have some legal issues we should know about? Also septum sepra means always seven from seper meaning always and septum meaning seven
It's sectumsempra. The expecto patronum translation is kind of weird, though. It makes a bit of sense, in a twisted sort of way.
Well, by destroying those whorecruxes(I think that's how it's spelled) he's commited murder quite a few times. He really is expecting his lawyer.

Lawyers are supposed to protect. It makes sense. I'd imagine the word in latin is derived from protection. After further research, though, I've found that the name of the spell, "patronus" (rather than patronum) has lawyer as only one of several possible translations. The others are: Godfather, patron, defender and benefactor.
I know Google Translate isn't always reliable but I looked at it there and Expecto patronum means "I look forward to advocate" but the word patronum itself just means "patron". Interesting.
^this^ I would think first of the Roman noble that was the patron of the regular roman citizens in the neighbourhood.
"Defender" or "champion" is probably a better translation. Some HP spells were silly canis latinicus but this one has a very good name.
