By the way he acts in the presence of certain male characters (such a Squiward and Patrick) or when he wears female clothes

I know some parents are a little disturbed by it as it promotes homosexuality  actually they tried to cancel it several times but they failed

Meh, it's a pretty cool TV show but I don't think there are many hidden orientation related messages in it.

Marine biology jokes/references, on the otherhand, are everywhere!

I mean, there's that assumption that Sandy and Spongebob get married, right? So no, I don't necessarily think so.

I really don't see much of it in spongebob. It's like all this controversy about Frozen. I never got LGBT messages out of Frozen either. But maybe I'm just not seeing it. It would be awesome. Now Mulan, that is a cartoon that should be relateable to LGBT. She didn't know where she belonged in life or who she was, dressed up like a man to join the army presumedly to protect her father but really to find out if she belonged in that role, and the movie insinuates that the general's son feel in love with her while she was dressed as a man, oh and the scene where the whole army cross dresses as women. Most I have seen in any cartoon.

Breaking gender barriers? If wearing female clothes counts, then yes. Breaking it a little - I guess.

Where I live, no one I know finds it outrageous. But yeah, I'm from The Netherlands and we're are (relatively) very open about those things (usually).

I don't watch Spongebob but from what's been talked about here it doesn't sound like it is breaking revolutionary barriers, sorry :/.

As for Frozen, it's more of a metaphor. People can take Elsa's "difference" and "coming out" about her powers in many ways, and one of the ways is reading it as a metaphor for a gay woman who had to hide her feelings, and later comes out when she can't keep it in anymore. I can see it that way, but it's not the initial read I got from it. I mean, literally it's about a woman with powers that she can't control, and those powers are fueled by emotions that she has to suppress so no one sees this "side" of her. While I watched it for the first time it really seemed to be talking about mental illness (metaphorically, again). It's really want the viewer wants to see in the film. Writers bring personal experience to anything they create, and so it's likely one or several of the writers on the film have dealt with feeling different and having to hide who they are to a significant degree, too, for some reason or another.

Speaking about cartoons breaking "gender barriers" I would say Adventure Time comes closest with BMO, a gameboy type robot who is gender neutral and gets referred to as both "He" and "She" at various points in the series.

Well I don't know, he is a little eccentric, Spongebob has the mind of a child anyway.

I have watched Spongebob since the beginning and I still do. To me he seems to just be his goofy self and not intentionally doing anything. However there is an aquatic cartoon that is very lgbt centered and that is the movie Shark Tale. How Shark Tale Became a Coming Out Story
