No they're not...knitting uses two needles where as crochet uses a hook type thing. They are also used to make different things and create different patterns.

No, but what is it called when you use only fingers, I made scarfs and a blanket that way.

Most sweaters and scarves are knitted. Knitting is more dense than crochet, and the two sides of the piece usually look different.

Crochet usually looks the same on both sides, and tends to be more airy and fancy, you see it sometimes on decorative things like doilies or fancy baby clothes.

You poor poor thing. You clearly haven't been given the proper knowledge by your parents :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Crochet and knitting are similar in that they involve using tools to pull loops of yarn through other loops in order to make fabric. The difference is the technique used. Knitting involves using two needles(or more if doing circular knitting) to make stitches. There are only two main knitting stitches, but many patterns to put them in.

Crochet on the other hand uses a single hook and has many many stitches, although only about 6 are used regularly. Crochet is debatably easier to do(I sure think it is), but involves more yarn used per yard of fabric created. Another benefit of crochet is that it is much easier to work without a pattern using a technique called freeform crochet. Also you have to buy just one set of tools to crochet, while knitting would require 3 or four sets if you really want to be able to do everything.

I would recommend learning crochet, but it's ultimately up to you. You could always take up one and learn the other later.

    No no no...
Crochet is with a hook and only one of them, while knitting is with two needles. Each one has different things you can make, and while you can make most of the same things, some things are easier to make with crochet or knitting, not both.

The biggest difference, in my opinion, is that my mother liked to crochet, but hated knitting. (I'm kidding about that being the biggest difference!)

There are some good explanations here already, but if you like pictures, here are some:

    Knitting:

This picture shows the most common stitch, using two straight needles.

    Crochet:

For crochet, one hook is used.

There was a question about using only your fingers instead of tools. If this is what you're thinking of, it's called "finger knitting" and you essentially make a long snake:

Can you only knit sweaters or could you do that from crocheting too ?

You can make just about any piece of clothing out of crochet that you can with knitting and visa versa, but you will need to use different patterns for each craft.

If you want help learning or figuring out a pattern or something, feel free to ask me! I do both knitting and crocheting, but I'm much better at knitting. I've knit a couple sweaters, even. They take a long time. I recommend starting with a hat or mittens. A lot of people start with scarves, but if you don't wear scarves a lot, hats and mittens are good first projects (and I think they're more interesting to make anyway).
