Yes, I'm polling transgender people as to what we like to be called. Obviously when our transgender status isn't relevant, it is best to call us, ya know, women and men, that goes without saying. But I'm trying to see what people like best when it's necessary that our trans status be brought into things. I'd prefer it if only transgender people voted here, but cisgender people, feel free to comment.

    I'd just say I'm a trans guy?

Although I'm a bit confused about what your asking.

The poll is up now, see the options. Hope that clears things up. Basically, I'm trying to find out how many people dislike being called mtf/ftm.

See, I take major issue with 'ftm'. It insists on bringing my past into my current gender. I am not a used-to-be-female-freak-with-a-bunch-of-letters-for-a-gender-who-will-never-really-be-male. I'm male.

I consider myself a transgender male. I don't feel entirely comfortable with referring to myself without the trans bit, yet. However, I am not out to most people so, if they call me a "female", I suck it in and deal with it. I would prefer if more people referred to me as being "male".

I voted for "trans woman/trans man." I'm aware of there being considerable debate about whether that's even appropriate. I still think it's preferable to MtF/FtM language.

Personally, I prefer to be called "sexy" when addressing myself, in most issues.

This is exactly how I feel about the FtM/MtF label. If I need to clarify, sure.

I don't really mind, otherwise. As long as you don't call me "a trans" or "a transgender" - "a transsexual" is OK, but really.

I think "transgender __" or "trans __" are both fine. I usually use "trans" because it's shorter. I admit to having used FTM/MTF a few times in the past but I try to avoid it, plus I don't like the emphasis it places on birth sex, or how it implies I was ever female

I am guilty of using FTM/MTF but that is just because I am too lazy to type out transman/transwoman. I ran in to several t-boys that use the term FTM on dating sites all the time. More often I use the terms t-boy/t-girl because it kinda sounds sexier to me. Although I can't tell you how many times people thought I was talking about the better known t-girls when I use the term transman. But if y'all say it's offensive I will try to break that habit.

It's not offensive, per se, at least not for me. A lot of people just dislike having others remind them that they were not born with the right body.

I can't speak for the entire trans community, but if you want to make sure, just ask. It's okay.

If I were trans, I imagine, I would agree with Hexagon. I think I would see it as I am a guy/girl, and always have been. Therefore, transman/transwoman would seem to be the least objectionable. Though I'd imagine I'd be fine with doing away the "trans" part altogether.

I'm still figuring out if a classify as binary transgender, but I think that trans woman sounds better than mtf. Mtf means male to female, and I don't really want to remember a time when I was male once I transition. Also trans is shorter than transgender, but still conveys the same point. I think you forgot one crucial set of labels though, and that's simply "woman" or "man". Some people would rather not be referred to as trans at all.

This poll was for labels outside of woman/man, I think. That's what the OP said, anyway. But, from what I've seen, a lot, if not most, trans people will prefer to drop the entire trans(gender) label altogether.

Any of those work for me, but I prefer the top one. Trans man. But really, I don't care which one, as long as it's not a derogatory term.
