It's not a positive thing. It refers to someone who takes part in social justice debates purely for their own reputation according to Urban Dictionary

    Who called you it?

Oh, it was on another site; the whole "gamer" debate came up again and I got called it in the midst of defending feminism.

Heh, I probably wouldn't be able to resist smirking and feeling slightly honored if somebody called me that. Usually any 'insults' thrown at me when discussing issues related to social justice tend to just be more direct and confrontational, like being accused of being an argumentative prick. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Depends what parts of feminism you defend really.

No arguing, these people are misandrist hypocrits (not jokers, people who actually believe it)

If they can provide evidence for their point, then fine, I will agree with them. I prefer egalitarian though, because then we are fighting for the rights of male people, female people, adogynous people, agender people, bigender people, genderqueer people and all the others I can't remember (sorry)

The key term there, was "people"

Well, I'm not going to get into a debate about feminism here, goldenarrow. Save that for another thread.

My point was that this term is definitely intended as a put-down and an excuse not to argue.

Only if you accept their definition of it.

I'd say being a warrior for social justice is a badge of honour.

If you've ever seen The West Wing, this scene sums up my approach to terms that try and get turned into bad words:

Absolutely. This was a guy on Youtube who said transsexuals are just as insane as someone who thinks they're a bird, that they mutilate themselves (SRS, a legal operation done by doctors, is apparently mutilation) and that gender is a fantasy made up by "social justice warriors" like me.

    Sorry. I got sidetracked :rolle:
I disagree with the term, if you want to argue then argue, don't throw insults.

Even if they meant it as an insult, I'd take it as a compliment, that sounds totally badass.

A couple of times, when trying to explain (my) demisexuality.
Which is why I just don't bother anymore.
In my experience, people who use that word, tend to be dismissive to the extent that throwing that word around somehow proves you wrong/them right and ends the discussion.
It's pointless to argue with such people.

  16. No. I don't I ever will. It's not really a good thing to be called because it's a title that mocks a certain group of internet users.

Typically Social Justice Warriors get so offended by something that has no effect on them in real life, and they make it their business to eradicate that little thing.

It happens often. They send hate mail, create different types of insensitive and deeply hurtful messages and art, and harrass and stalk a person until they get that person to change their opinion or views to fit theirs. Something like "I hated that movie for this personal reason" sets off these kind of people they do the above mentioned behavior until that people takes back their opinion. When this happens, a social justice warrior believes the have done good for the community and expects to be praised for their efforts.

Most of the time they just attack people with opinions that have no effect on anyone whatsoever.

Calling an anti-SJW an SJW is like saying you're a Christian atheist.
It may sound positive to be a warrior for social justice, but the term is associated with the left wing's "faction" of irrational hypocrites with a massive victim complex. They're basically the leftist equivalent of the stereotypical Tea Partier.

Twospiritlycan has a pretty good description of SJWs.

If I correctly call someone a racist, being called a SJW isn't going to make me feel bad.

I can understand those with reservations about how some people carry out social justice (such as people who genuinely believe in violent revolution), but to throw a hissy fit every time someone calls out offensive behaviour is not a show of strength. It's a tantrum about others' equality.

No, although I am sure that many, many people here on EC think of me as one. I really wish you wouldn't, because I'm not.

    Social Justice Warrior.

    Hm...

Do I get some awesome-looking armor, and a purple cape? If so, then, yeah, I might just be down for this social warrior-thing.

Person: I'm a lawyer. What about you?
    Me: I'm...

    *BRIGHTLY-COLORED EXPLOSIONS! SPARKLES!*

    ... SOCIAL JUSTICE... WAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOR~!!!

It's like a dream come true, LOL!
