Imagine this: You have not yet been born. You're conscious, and aware of what is going on in the world. Pretty soon, you're going to be born. You can choose into which country. But crucially, you can't choose into what circumstances. You're as likely to be born into the least well off of families as you are into the most. You might be of any race, gender, sexuality and so on. Your parents could be wonderful, or they could be abusive.

So answer this: Which country do you choose?

Iceland no doubts about it. The gap in wealth between classes over there is tiny add that to the incredibly low amounts of crime, high amounts of weed, great education system and the awesome geology of the place and it makes for the best place to live.

Whoa. I don't get the connection to the thread title, but your question is fascinating.

I think I'd go with Denmark...or maybe Sweden...can I let it be random between those two?

(if not, I'd better do some additional research before giving a final answer :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

    Wikipedia:
The veil of ignorance, along with the original position, is a method of determining the morality of a certain issue (e.g., slavery) based upon the following thought experiment: parties to the original position know nothing about their particular abilities, tastes, and position within the social order of society.

When the parties are selecting the principles for distribution of rights, positions, and resources in the society they will live in, the veil of ignorance prevents them from knowing about who they will be in that society. For example, for a proposed society in which 50% of the population is kept in slavery, it follows that on entering the new society there is a 50% likelihood that the participant would be a slave.

I remember this from school social philosophy class

I don't know. Let's say Norway. They have nice fjords.

I think I'd pick Sweden, and then only hope I'm born in one of the bigger cities.

Sweden or Iceland, I've heard much positive things about them.

  16. I'm honestly unsure. I'm most familiar with the States, having lived here my entire life, but things definitely aren't great here, so I'd hate to be put in a terrible situation. Maybe Iceland, as others have said.

I have a question. When we are born, into whatever country we choose, will it only be from 2014 and beyond, or can it be any time period? This might change my answer, but I'll just give a general one.

I want to say the United States, but who knows where I would wind up. While I like the area that I am in, there is a chance I would not be placed here. Canada is a possibility, and maybe Iceland. Switzerland, too.

United states or Sweden. Kind of leaning towards Sweden though.

Somewhere in Europe. America is a tough place to be different. Especially conservative America. Ugh.
