WOOT! Sydney is great! I've just had a weekend there by myself (in Aussie for a friend's wedding) and totally fell in love with Sydney! Didn't get to check out the night-life or gay scene but apparently Oxford Street? Some Aussie members might be able to help you more, but Oxford Street is pretty gay-friendly at least

Have a great holiday

*whispers* Melbourne's better.
As far as I know, Oxford Street's the place to go. Try checking out the Mardi Gras site, it has some good recommendations.

Hey there and welcome to Sydney!

A few tips!

Newtown, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst are the most significantly gay area's!

My favourite club is the Columbian, it's not 100% gay so you find a few straight couples, straight girls and Bi guys there. It's about 140m east of Hyde Park on Oxford St (kind of central city).

Oxford street isn't a strictly gay area for those who are asking. There are a LOT of gay bars and clubs on the street (there are all over Sydney nowdays) but there are also some straight ones. Oxford is considered gay because it hosts the Mardi Gra parade.

Some area's I would suggest avoiding when looking for gay orientated events are Maroubra and Coogee beach (don't go out in the western suburbs much so I can't comment)

King Cross despite all the gossip and drama said about it is actually a pretty cool place (avoid Wednesday nights though as it attracts a rather homophobic crowd)

Bondi and Oxford St are awesome during the day for fun (and perving )

Good luck and hope you enjoy yourself!

^ Except that Melbourne has been freezing cold and unpleasant - while Sydney has been having glorious sunshine and temperatures 10DegC above average (and probably 15Degs above Melbourne's average for this time of year).

Of course, if you like trams...and rain...and cold...

Anyway - hope you enjoy!

Yes but Sydney is the gay capital.

But I do agree that Melbourne is overall a nicer city if the weather is nice on both ends.

The shopping (excluding mainstream stores) is waaaaaaay better, the fashion and people are so much better and the food just outright shits all over Sydney.

But the terrain and climate is crap :/

I love the fact that Melbourne's weather is all over the place. The skyline's feel completely changes depending on the weather.

There are soooo manny reason why melbourne is better....

Found this on faceook..
Quote:
- Better and cheaper food
- Nicer people. Sydney people can be rude!
- Has an arts and entertainment culture (Sydney doesn't!!!)
- We host the International Melbourne Comedy Festival, Grand Prix, Moomba and various other festivals
- Our CBD is easier to navigate
- We have trams and not lightrail
- We have Australia's SECOND best university - the University of Melbourne, ranked 22 in the world! (NOW BEFORE ANYONE DISPUTES THIS, PLEASE REFER http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Melbourne) Link below.
- People come down to Melbourne to shop
- We hosted the World Swimming Championships
- AFL comes from Melbourne - much better than that NRL crap
- Our Lord Mayor is John So. Everyone knows that he rocks!
- Sydney is the most polluted capital city in Australia! (Source: "What's good for you")
- Own experience with people with anger management problems coming from Sydney
- Melbourne has better drivers - Sydney drivers have anger management issues (generally, Sydney people are just angry, see above - people who SLAM audit files in rooms and books on desks in an office environment, isn't that right?)
- Traffic is better in Melbourne
- Melbourne has more markets for getting fresh fruit, produce and other cool stuff. There's Queen Victoria, Preston, Prahran, South Melbourne and many more!
- Melbourne is grid layout, north east south west. Sydney is a nauseating rollercoaster.
- Fashionable, friendly. funky, fun, vibe, bars, parks, basically how ugly is George St? How beautiful is Collins St?Adds to our AWESOME nightlife
- We don't have ugly beach riots like Cronulla!
- We also have the national champion football (Melbourne Victory) club... and the countries greatest high school, aptly named, Melbourne High School (also not forgetting MacRob for the girls)
- Better architecture rather than relying on the Harbour and Opera House for everything!
- We have the biggest shopping complex in the southern hemisphere - Chaddy!
- Crown Casino kicks Star City's ass!
- Cheaper booze
- FASHION!
- We have the Eureka Tower - tallest residential building in the world!
- Oscar winner Cate Blanchett comes from Melbourne! (and MLC)
- Public transport is so much damn cheaper!
- We have the Aus Open and Kooyong Classic, which kicks Adidas international tournament's ass :P
- Worst coffee ever in Sydney
- Melbourne doesn't have a stupid monorail!
- More expensive accommodation in Sydney and property in general
- Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival time, not to mention the Melbourne Cup!
- MCG is a much better stadium than SCG
- Well endowed men - note I am ONLY putting up your suggestions so feel free to argue this one with me
- Really great bars
- Monopoly Board which features Melbourne
- Melbourne also has the tallest office building in australia - depending on who you believe - either 120 Collins, Rialto or 101 Collins - they are all taller than any buildings in Sydney
- 7 out of the top 10 Aussie companies have their HQ in Melbourne....BHP, Telstra, ANZ Coles Myer, NAB, FOSTERS
- Melbourne had the first ever cricket test match
- Bigger agricultural show
- The Melbourne Cup and really awesome Spring Carnival
- Bigger Fashion Festivals (Melbourne International)
- Melbourne hosted the first sitting of parliament, before Canberra was established
- Melbourne also has the best fire-twirlers in Aust
melbourne is the sporting capital, all the best sporting people from around the world come to our city
- We were the capital city of Australia before Canberra... They've never been and never will be!
- We hosted the Olympic Games first... They can never take that away from us hahaha
- People go to Sydney to visit, but to Melbourne to Live
- Sydney was designed by criminals, Melbourne by Engineers and Architects
- Melbourne, along with Vancouver, the world's most livable city.
- We have distinctive seasons in Melbourne and get to wear layers.
- Melbourne didn't produce Lara Bingle - so where the bloody hell is she now?
- Dont have Tollgates on freeways
-Melbourne will be Australia's largest city by 2028(therefore makes us better because people actualy want to come here)
read this one http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...857897713.html it outlines how we are better than sydney..

^OK there's one mistake with that. Chadstone isn't the largest shopping center in the southern hemisphere, and Melbourne doesn't have the largest. It has the THREE LARGEST. Knox City Shopping Centre, Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and Chadstone.
And then heaps of Melbournian shopping centres are all over the list.

Also continuing on with the architecture point, six of the ten tallest buildings in Australia are from Melbourne, AND three more buildings which are being built will be in the top ten over the next few years. BTW another mistake, Eureka isn't the tallest residential building in the world. Q1 is, but that's because they stuck a 60M toothpick on top of it. Eureka is the tallest to roof, number of floors and highest habitable floors.

Also Melbourne city isn't all grid-based. The CBD is a grid, and then the newer areas such as Southbank and the Docklands aren't on the grid, but they're still easy to navigate at least.

And talking about navigating around Melbourne, is IS easy! If you get lost, you just need to identify a landmark you know and you'll be easly able to tell where you are.
