I myself grew up in the family of a US Army solider. When he was just a Private, he was stationed in West Germany when the Berlin Wall was erected in August, 1961. That was a bit before my time, but my relevance to the story comes later.
For 28 years the Berlin Wall stood, fencing West Berlin from East Germany, and East Berlin. During that 28 years, I was born, and shortly before my 21st birthday was stationed in West Berlin Geramny. The cold war was starting to unravel, and in fact the wall had recently started opening up when I got to Berlin in March 1990. I was there long enough to be awarded the World War II Army of Occupation Medal. Berlin was still an occupied city by the 4 allied powers from WWII (French, British, Americans, and the Russians). That Occupation ended 24 years ago today, when Germany unified, pretty much ending the cold war. I was at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, when East Germany ceased to exist.

Anyone else have any stories they remember from the Cold War?

I wasn't alive but it's one of my favorite time periods in history about which to learn.

I was one when the Soviet Union ceased to exist. So, no I don't remember the Cold War .

My dad, on the other hand, remembers having the whole "duck and cover" drills at school.

My mother does (she's 49 in December). I asked her if she was afraid of nuclear war as a child and she told me that she was terrified of the world ending. If I was a child during the cold war, I would have been the same, as I worried about the end of world all the time when I was younger.

The Soviet Union collapsed 3 years, 2 months, and 4 days before I was born, so nope. I wasn't around.

There was a definite fear of the "Button" being pressed. I know most younger people don't relate, but movies like "Dr Strangelove", and even comedy songs by Weird Al, played on some of those fears Take "Christmas at Ground Zero" for instance. It made light of a fear most had.

Yup. I grew during the Cold War and was in college when the Berlin Wall came down and the USSR came apart.

Before my time, but my mom always told me that the fear of nuclear war was very real, especially as a kid.

Nowadays, we have fear of Islamic terrorism--that's something I grew up with.

I vaguely remember the Berlin Wall coming down and when Gorbachev resigned. Freddie Mercury dying was a much bigger deal for me at that time, though. :icon_sad:

No I don't, but I'm familiar with it.

The earliest thing I can remember (That's in the same vein) was when Clinton bombed Iraq. I remember watching the actual bombing on TV.

Why yes, I remember the History Channel program quite clearly. Like it was just yesterday!

Really? I nor anyone I know ever really has. Any threat of it was either very far away, or extremely sparse in "local" occurrence.

When I was about 2 years old, I was a little chubby kid with almost white/blonde hair. This was 52 years ago...

Well anyway, they called me "Nikita" because I looked like Nikita Kruschev, the leader of the USSR (amazing how many don't even know what those sinister 4 letters represent!). You know, the guy who banged his shoe at the UN...

Oh yes. I figured I'd either die somewhere near Fulda Gap when the Red Army tanks poured through NATO lines, or maybe in the nuclear fire. I was a very morbid teenager.

I was very much alive, and aware, of the years 1947–1991, and the things that happened.

    1. I wasn't alive back then, so I don't know.

    2. I learnt what is was about, but I don't remember it. I know so little about history..
