Default What happens when we die?

Near death experiences have always been a fascination for me. This is a new study they are doing on people who go through these experiences.

Well the closest I have come to dying was hearing the news about Heath Ledger's death.

But I must say that it's the most amazing sensation when you die in dreams.

They really are my favourite dreams.

The only thing even CLOSE to a near death experience was waking up after being knocked out and someone shining a light into my eyes. That freaked me out and I was convinced I was dead.

Still, interesting read.

We're dead, I would assume. Like being not-born, but in reverse. Going back to nonexistence. But now I'm getting philosophical and that usually ends badly, so back to the subject...

I don't have the time to read a full article right now, but if I had to guess I'd say people can imagine some really freaky sh*t going on when they think they're about to die. Never had a NDE myself.

I don't really care. Whatever happens after death, I think it'll all work out perfectly if you try to be a good person.

I've thought about this many times and my only conclusion is...we'll find out when we die, not a moment sooner. Also, when I think about this too much my head hurts.

I've never had a near death experience but my good friend (and EC member), Marmalade had one. But I'll let her share it if she feels.

Well, I have once had a near death experience a few years ago and I don't know if I was actually dead or just deeply knocked out but I could have been dead and not known it at all. Who knows what happened to me while I was out but when I woke up I couldn't even remember closing my eyes, and during the time that I was out, weather I was dead or not, I hate to say it but it was full of nothingness. It was like I never existed, just total nothingness. It scares me to think that when we die everything is just cut off, as if u never existed, there is no you anymore, it's just the body you left behind. Everything you thought in the past about anything, all of your life while you are alive is just vanished... I don't think I can explain it any better than that, can anyone understand what I am saying??

It's rather sad to think about, like life has no purpose but to make u feel happiness, sadness, depression, anger, pain, pleasure, etc. while you are alive and after you are dead it's just nothing, nothing ever happened to you as far as you're concerned, because you are dead, everything is nothing!!

Idk if this scares you but it sure as hell scares me!

Ditto! I just think there are way too many spiritual things that happen for us to just die.

I think that if we think we know exactly what will happen, then dying itself wouldn't be any sort of an adventure.
And I think if we have to die someday, it should at least be an adventure.
I don't want to think about what happens when I die - I'll know when I get there, and I can just hope that it'll be a good surprise.

Umm... Okay, I'm not trying to be cynical, but I thought that our brain would just halt its electrical impulses and we'd lose consciousness and then be... dead.

Perhaps the brain, under the strain of being "dead" for the couple of seconds, fabricates a reason or a cause for it. Perhaps it's a coping mechanism...?
