I have read a couple of books in which this is mentioned. All I can gather it is some sort of name for 1920's(when the books are set) lesbians. And also, how would it be pronounced? Sap-fo? Sapho?:icon_ques:confused2::confused2::confused2:
Sappho was a Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. She wrote romantic and erotic poetry about other women, and because of this, we use the term "Lesbian" to refer to female homosexuals. "Sapphic" means relating to Sappho or forms of poetry that she used. It would be pronounced "saffo" in English, "sapfo" in Greek.
sappho /sapphic means being lesbian or women who are only into women and not men . it comes from that poet Sappho who was well known for her love of women . Mintberry crunch pretty much sums it up well . even the word sapphist comes from sappho's name it also means lesbian .
I know this marks me as a juvenile mind, but the proximity of Sappho, WA and Beaver, WA has always made me chuckle.
She is the most famous female Greek poet, which was a male-dominated profession (unfortunately like most things in Ancient Greece). So, she's an exceptional poet. You can read her Hymn to Aphrodite here: Diotima
