This may sound like an incredibly stupid question, but I am wondering if the traditional " 'hoods " still exist. I don't refer to neighborhoods that are of low socioeconomic status or predominantly non-white.

I am referring to neighborhoods that are stereotyped as "the ghetto;" places that are riddled with gang violence, drive-by shootings, police that harass and antagonize the residents, etc.

I don't know if it would be considered the hood, but there is one suburb near where I live that has a bad name for people who aren't wealthy and aren't of good character.

Of course they do. Around here, you do not want to go to South-Central L.A. unless you want a cap in your ass.

Definitely places still full of gang violence, drive-by shootings, and police corruption. South-Central L.A. is probably the most infamous of all American ghettos.

Even in the small town I work in there are places you just don't go. Sure, they're not as bad as the bad parts of Toledo or Detroit, but...

Yes, I'm afraid so. In the UK they are often called 'sink' estates. Gun control laws make drive by shootings less common here, but gang violence, stabbings, robberies, drug/alcohol dependency issues and high levels of social, economic and health deprivation blight these communities. Often you find tension between police and residents too.

Having said all of that, there are some absolutely wonderful people living within these communities - people who have experienced life in a way that many can't possibly imagine. If you look at data for these communities there are some interesting and revealing facts too. Far from being no go areas for LGBT people, it's actually the case that LGBT people do live in these areas and experience greater acceptance and tolerance than in the leafy suburbs.

Yes, we definitely have them here in Chicago. Although I will say that they are for the most part divorced enough from my experience that when I read the title of this thread I assumed you were referring to gay neighborhoods--we have two of those as well.

I live near one. Across the bridge and drive down south a bit, there are murders and drug violence almost everyday. Great thing for me, although I am near them I'm at the same time so very far from them.

Sink estates are nowhere near as bad as your typical American ghetto though. There aren't many if any places in my city that I would feel unsafe in - maybe at night I would feel uneasy but I've walked through some of the UK's most crime-ridden areas at the dead of night and have never had trouble.

I think a lot of the inner city terrace houses are worse than council estates, it really depends on the area.

Every town will have a better side of town where the rent is higher and then the shadier part of town where things aren't as good. In the traditional sense of ghetto, in large cities they definitely exist. I believe in the American city structure they exist as part of the city but outside the downtown where it is often safe. In French and other European city structure the suburbs outside of the city is where the ghettos are usually located.

    What?????

    Of course!!

All day every day!!! Pop a cap up yo bootyhole!!!

But seriously, gang violence will never ceise to exist as long as money is around. To be honest, I would have been in a gang if there wasn't circumstance.

In the US, it also depends on the town. For example, Downtown Detroit is nice, and it's suburbs are generally alright, but the areas of Detroit outside downtown are places you don't want to go any time of day.

That's how I've always imagined it--I don't see places in the UK being as bad as somewhere like Camden, New Jersey:
