What's you opinion on this word. Lgbt people use it rebelliously and others use it derogatorily for lgbt people.

As long as it's not being used as an insult I don't mind it.

Don't mind it; never minded it. I use the word "queer" to refer to non-cis/straight people in general.

It's not "rebellious" for me; I never really heard it as an insult. Around here, "fag" is the insult. No one really says "queer" as an insult where I'm from.

I don't really like it, since it's always had a negative connotation with it, at least when I've heard it used.

It's just a word, hate on the people who put bad meaning to it, not the word itself.

Personally, I dislike the word when it's applied to sexuality.

I enjoy its all encompassing nonspecificity.

Never cared for it, when I was growing up it was used exclusively as an insult. I don't mind if other people choose to label themselves that way, it's nice that it can be a bit less specific, but personally I wouldn't want to use it for myself.

I don't mind, and I like it as an umbrella term.

I kind of like it. I've never used it, and I've never heard it used as an insult, so maybe that's a game-changer. As long as I don't hear it used as a derogatory term, I'll continue to like it. :icon_wink

    Ah this old chestnut!

I greatly dislike the word, and greatly dislike the use as a generic term for all non-straight people. I do accept if people wish to label themselves as it (as in people who identify as "genderqueer", fair enough), that is fine, but if they label others with the term I find it exceptionally rude.

If I heard someone using the term in an all encompassing way I would likely have a word with them, if they continued to use it in this manner I would have to disassociate myself from them. Its simply not something I want uttered around me or applied to me.

It all depends on the intent. It can be used innocently or hurtfully, so it goes either way.

Yeah, this pretty much explains why I like queer.

When used as an orientation, it's not very specific. It has some vagueness to it. I think it's good to have a label that describes that. :icon_bigg

Agreed. Some people have more fluid sexuality and I think there needs to be a word to describe that. "Queer" works very well for that purpose. Not everyone feels their sexuality can be describe in traditional terms and labels. And I don't believe in telling people how they should label themselves as long as it isn't hurting anyone. It's also a good umbrella term. Basically, as long as it's not being used as insult or to hurt anyone, I really like it.

'Queer' and 'genderqueer' are pretty useful. Sure, queer can be used as an insult, but then again, so can most words relating to sexual orientation or gender.
